Ahoy Sailor!

Happy October! Fall sailing season is officially in full swing, and we're loving the sunny days and crisp breezes!

One of our favorite events in October (besides Halloween) is the United States Sailboat Show right here at the City Dock in Annapolis! This internationally-recognized boat show is considered the largest and most prestigious show of its kind, and it's even cooler that it's here! We're especially excited because the show was canceled last year due to COVID. This year, the boat show is October 14-18 and we'll be there repping the Sailing School with a surprise new boat — the Tartan 245! If you're coming to the show, be sure to stop by to say hi!

Don't miss out on the last few weeks of our sailing season too! The weather is beautiful and we'd love to see sailors coming out til the end of the season! We're open for rentals until October 24.

See you on the water!

What's Happening at Annapolis Sailing School

Check out that spinnaker! Some of our staff members test sailed the Tartan 245, fast, fun boat that we're adding to our KeelBoat Club fleet!
September gave us some of our biggest and best KeelBoat Club races yet! The KBC is officially over 100 members and we're thrilled to be growing!
Changing leaves aren't the only beautiful colors that fall offers us! There's something special about a gorgeous sunset on a cool, crisp evening.
Our last Dinghy Day of the season was in mid-September. We're proud of how much sailors have learned over the course of the summer!
Staff Member of the Month: Rick Nelson!
Introducing Staff Member of the Month! Every month, we'll highlight one of our staff members, their awesome contributions to the Sailing School, and what they like to do outside of sailing!
This month, we're featuring Rick Nelson! Rick is the owner and general manager of Annapolis Sailing School, and you won't find anyone more passionate about us than him! Rick and his wife Jenny bought the sailing school in 2014. Since then, their hard work and dedication to making the Sailing School 'seriously fun' only deepened our legacy and reputation as a premier sailing school in Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay region.

"I always like to say that when Jenny and I bought the School in 2014, I was moveable ballast. And while I have now been certified in ASA 101, 103 and 104, that is just the beginning of learning…and enjoying. As for Jenny and my goals for the School, it is to live up to our motto — Seriously Fun. Be it students learning the challenges of sailing, employees working to meet customers needs, or me seeking to improve the School, it has be to a high standard, but enjoyable for all. I know I’m thrilled with what we have all done and look forward to doing even better.

As to my activities away from the Sailing School, I am a long suffering Orioles season ticket holder.  I like to occasionally drive sports cars as a member of the Classic Car Club. And I am a history buff, particularly “the age of fighting sail," which is befitting of a co-owner of a sailing school and a man with the last name Nelson. In fact, on October 21st, I plan to have a few cups of grog in celebration of Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets in the Battle of Trafalgar." — Rick

Introducing the 245 by Tartan!
Annapolis Sailing School is excited to announce that we're purchasing two new 245s by Tartan to add to our fleet! These beautiful boats are the next step for sailor who have mastered the
School's iconic Rainbow 24s. Cai Svendsen, longtime sailor, instructor and racer, collaborated with famed boat designer Tim Jackett and premier boat builder Tartan to produce this next generation instruction, yet sporty daysailer.

“The 245 is meant to unleash the real joy of sailing to all who step aboard. It is my hope that the 245 by Tartan will be a way that I can share the joy of sailing, which has so enriched my life, with others wherever they sail.”

The result of these efforts — safety and comfort for new sailors, enjoyment and thrills for experienced sailors.
For the Sailing School, the 245 will allow us to build upon the skills that our students acquired on the Rainbow in ASA 101. Advanced sail trim and spinnaker flying classes will be offered in 2022 on the 245. KeelBoat Club Director Ian “No Reef” Morrison has plans for the 245 as well, introducing a racing tactics course that will allow KBC members to build upon experiences acquired in our highly popular Monday Night races. He also plans to make the spacious 245’s available to qualified KBC’ers just to take out for fun.

“I’d like to enter one or both boats in the Wednesday Night races, see what we can do against other sailors and boats in Annapolis."

With the KeelBoat Club giving sailors access to a great fleet and social sailing community, what more could you ask for?
