Find your spark with girl exploring STEM

Celebrate National 4-H Week!!!

This week marks the annual National 4-H Week with this year's theme of Find Your Spark!  Intuitively, you may understand what a "spark" is - something that ignites interest and drives passion - but how is it defined with 4-H? A youth spark is an essential ingredient of thriving. Sparks give young people a sense of direction and encourage goal setting. They go beyond leisure activities, as sparks:
  1. Create actions that not only contribute to the young person and society at large;

  2. Provide the self-motivation or drive for a young person’s growth in knowledge and skill;

  3. Enhance a young person’s fellowship with others that have similar interests, particularly caring adult experts who can help the young person learn and grow.

As an added benefit, research suggests that sparks serve as a protective factor for young people, keeping them out of trouble. How many times did something you cared about keep you out of trouble when you were young?! Overall, sparks help set youth on a trajectory to thrive by pulling them to succeed in many areas of their lives, such as personal, social, and academic.

4-H plays an important role in helping young people discover and pursue their sparks. In some cases, it is a matter of youth recognizing their spark or simply developing it when the spark has already found them!  What is your spark? Even as adults, something feeds our passion and drives us in our daily lives. Consider how we can share our gifts, talents, and expertise with the next generation.

We are kicking off a new 4-H club year for 2021-2022 and 4HOnline enrollment is open for youth and adult volunteers. Great things are happening this year with in-person and distance-learning 4-H programs. Take advantage of this important week to reengage with 4-H and highlight the remarkable youth in your communities and showcase the incredible experiences that 4‑H provides. Share your spark on our social media channels (FacebookInstagram) or with our alumni and supporters! Show your 4-H pride by wearing your 4-H membership shirt this week. Not a member of or volunteer with 4-H yet? Enroll online today!

This e-newsletter communicates many statewide programs. To find out what is happening in your local community, reach out to your local 4-H agent.
