Opinion
Hello <<First Name>>,
There are some demographics you can make fun of, and some you can’t. For example, it’s fine to make light of Christians, but not Muslims. You can poke fun at rednecks, but not transgender people. You can laugh at skinny folks, but not fat ones. Matter of fact, of all the groups it’s not OK to denigrate these days, obese people are probably the largest. That didn’t come out right.
There was a time when it was acceptable to jest about the weight of our larger friends, but that time has passed. Which may be a good thing. Some people have little control over their weight, and should not be ridiculed for it. Others may be fat on purpose, making it their choice. There are Fat Pride and Fat Acceptance movements now, and those groups are getting bigger all the time. That didn’t come out right.
Above: Hal Smith as Otis
The truth is obesity is not healthy, unless you happen to be a bear. If you’re a bear, being fat is not only acceptable, but desirable, especially if it’s fall and you’re planning to crawl into your lair and sleep for several months. In that case, you need all the extra pounds you can get, and there’s no better way to take in plenty of hibernation calories than eating salmon raw, straight out of a river. At least, that’s how the brown bears of Brooks Falls do it. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend such a diet for people, but hey, you do you.
Brooks Falls is in Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska, which is one of the most difficult parks in the country to access. To get there you have to first go to Alaska, way up between Canada and Russia, someplace. Then you have to take either a plane or a boat to Katmai, which is an island or something, and then you’re probably going to get eaten by a bear, especially if you go at this time of year. The bears on Katmai will eat just about anything, and you’re part of the food chain there. Just so you know.
As you can imagine, going to Katmai to take a gander at bears is pretty expensive, even if it doesn’t kill you, but it’s become a popular thing to do. To paraphrase Gus McCrea, a man that likes to watch bears is, he’s hard to stop. But Katmai is not exactly covered up with tourist accommodations, and you have to book early if you want a place to stay up there. Especially during Fat Bear Week, which just ended. Sorry you missed it.
For the record, I didn’t write about Fat Bear Week ahead of time because I didn’t want to skew the results of the vote. I also didn’t write about it earlier because I’m a world class procrastinator, but you won’t catch me admitting that in print.
See, not everyone who enjoys watching bears eat salmon at Brooks Falls can afford to spend the money and time to go there, but thanks to AlGore’s Interwebnets, they don’t have to. A website called explore.org has live video feed, so you can while away hours watching the bears fatten up for winter, while you’re supposed to be working. It’s the American thing to do. You can even vote for your favorite bear, and encourage others to vote, too. And voting is what freedom is all about. Well, that and garage sales.
This whole thing started back in 2014, when Mike Fitz and some other rangers at Katmai National Park decided to hold a competition, and asked people to vote for whichever bear they thought was the fattest one at Brooks Falls. That was a one-day thing, but it was so popular that Fitz expanded it into a week-long extravaganza of bear fatness unequaled in the annals of bear fat.
Watching bears eat fish is probably not for everyone. They mostly just sit there in the rushing water, looking around and being fat. Every once in a while they’ll grab a fish and eat it, but otherwise it’s pretty boring. The fun ones are the bears that position themselves at the falls and wait for salmon swimming upstream to jump right into their mouths. Salmon are evidently not all that smart.
But watching bears engaged in bear-related activities can become addictive, and apparently so can voting for the fattest one. More than 200,000 votes were cast during the 2019 Fat Bear Week. In 2020 over 600,000 people voted. I have no idea if Dominion machines were used, but Covid may have had something to do with the vote count. Or not. To paraphrase Gus McCrea, a man that likes to vote for bears is, he’s hard to stop. You can even campaign for your favorite bear, which sounds like a lot more fun than campaigning for a politician. Not that some of them aren’t fat, too, but they’re far less fun to watch.
The bears all have numbers, and some have been given names. My favorite is Otis, who strongly resembles Otis Campbell from the Andy Griffith show. You remember Otis. He was the town drunk, who voluntarily locked himself in jail every weekend. He was also the only person in Mayberry who was married.
That didn’t come out right . . .

Lubbock Rep. John Frullo talks priorities for West Texas in redistricting. "As the Texas House Committee on Redistricting approved its initial draft of Texas’ new state house districts this week, District 84 representative John Frullo says he is focusing on elevating West Texas’ representation and preserving conservative-leaning districts. In a decade when Texas gained 4 million people, almost exclusively in the major Metro areas, rural districts risk losing representation to the big cities. Rep. Frullo says Lubbock, however, has kept pace with the rest. “We all know about the Republican versus Democrat discussions, and for lack of a better term, arguments that we have down here. Just as prevalent are the rural versus urban,” Rep. Frullo said. “We want to keep the rural representation out there… it’s very difficult to do when our growth rates are not keeping up with the other areas of the state, the urban areas of the state. Lubbock and the surrounding areas have pretty much kept up.”" More at Everything Lubbock.
Star Trek: William Shatner Will Fly to Space From West Texas. "Shatner will become the oldest person to go to space. He'll join three others -- two of them paying customers -- aboard a Blue Origin capsule. He'll wind up being the second actor to reach space this month: Russia is launching an actress and a film director to the International Space Station on Tuesday for almost two weeks of moviemaking." More at NBC DFW.
An abandoned oil well springs back to life, throwing one West Texas rancher into a battle over her land’s future. "It’s a distressing sight, but Watt said it’s nothing compared to the existential threat a nearly 70-year-old oil well called “Estes #24” is causing her. The well was acquired by Chevron decades ago and by 1995 the oil company plugged and abandoned the Estes, filling it with cement to prevent it from leaking. But in early June, the well was discovered spewing toxic water believed to be from past oil production. “With the Estes #24 blowing out at the surface, that’s pretty much been my life,” Watt said." More at Texas Standard.
The vanishing access to abortion providers. "West Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota all have large areas that are at least a four-hour drive from an abortion provider. ... Conversely, there are still counties on the coasts where people are likely to live close to an abortion provider, including Kitsap County, Washington, and Hudson County, New Jersey — both under a mile away."
New York and Texas are winning the war to attract bitcoin miners. "Within the U.S., 19.9% of bitcoin’s hashrate – that is, the collective computing power of miners – is in New York, 18.7% in Kentucky, 17.3% is in Georgia, and 14% in Texas, according to Foundry USA, which is the biggest mining pool in North America and the fifth-largest globally. A mining pool lets a single miner combine its hashing power with thousands of other miners all over the world, and there are dozens from which to choose. “This is the first time we’ve actually had state-level insight on where miners are, unless you wanted to go cobble through all the public filings and try to figure it out that way,” said Nic Carter, co-founder of Castle Island Ventures, who presented Foundry’s data at the Texas Blockchain Summit in Austin on Friday. “This is a much more efficient way of figuring out where mining occurs in America.”" More at CNBC.

Texas has raised $54 million in private donations for its border wall plan. Almost all of it came from this one billionaire. "An out-of-state billionaire who has previously bankrolled attempts to defend controversial immigration laws is responsible for nearly all the donations to Gov. Greg Abbott’s $54 million border wall fund. A member of one of America’s richest family dynasties, Timothy Mellon, contributed nearly 98% of the fund’s total donations when he donated $53.1 million in stock to the state in August, according to public records. Mellon is the 79-year-old Wyoming-based grandson of banking tycoon and former U.S. Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon. Before Mellon’s donations, Abbott’s private fundraising campaign had stalled at about $1.25 million around mid-August, two months after its launch — a drop in the bucket for a project with a price tag estimated in the billions of dollars. But on Aug. 27, a state website that tracks donations to the crowdfunding effort said the fund had jumped to nearly $19 million. By the end of the month, it had topped $54 million." More at Texas Tribune.
Texas Senate approves congressional map that draws no new Black or Hispanic districts even as people of color fueled population growth. "In anticipation of federal challenges to the map, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a Republican who presides over the Senate, said in a statement Friday that the proposal approved by the chamber was “legal and fair” and represented a “commitment to making sure every Texan’s voice is heard in Washington, D.C.”" More at Texas Tribune.
Un-fat For Command. "On September 30, I pointed out on Twitter that Milley’s hefty bulk was well outside of Army standards. All Hell broke loose. An Army major out of Fort Dix by the name of Justin Rose doxxed my personnel file, releasing my military physical fitness records in an attempt to “own” me. It’s true, in 2019 the Marine Corps allowed Marines to run as many physical fitness tests as they wanted. I ran four of them. Three were underwhelming, the fourth was a first-class score within acceptable standards for officers. Hardly the nuclear drop MilTwitter thought it was." More at American Greatness.
Texas clinics cancel abortions after court reinstates ban. "At Whole Woman's Health, which has four abortion clinics in Texas, president and CEO Amy Hagstrom Miller said she did not have the number of abortions her locations performed for patients beyond six weeks but put it at “quite a few." She said her clinics were again complying with the law and acknowledged the risks her physicians and staff had taken." More at Chron.com.
Why Texans Can't Buy a Tesla in the State. "Despite the announcement, it may be premature for Texans to begin celebrating the dawn of the electric vehicle revolution in the state. Texas franchise laws will require the electric car maker to ship its Texas-made vehicles out of state before they can be sold and shipped back to Lone Star buyers. State statutes prohibit automakers from making direct sales and requires them to instead sell their cars through independently owned car dealerships, according to a report by Business Insider. ... Texans can order a car from the company’s website but won’t be able to place an order in the new Texas facility, according to Business Insider. Residents would also be required to drive to another state to buy the Tesla, or have paperwork sent to another state for processing." More at mySA.com.
