A Great Country Draft on Saturday!

It was so good to see all the familiar and new faces in person at the 2021 Country Draft held in the lovely Browning Hall Auditorium this past weekend. The morning began with a short talk from Dr. Warren Rosenblum about situations of concern in the world. Students had fantastic follow-up questions for him. Hopefully some delegates left with new resolution topic ideas to consider. After a quick three rounds of UN and country trivia, the actual drafts were held. Students left with a list of countries drafted for their schools. Those lists will be emailed and posted on our website later this week.

So what's next for MODEL UN preparation?
  • Once students know their countries, they need to sign up for the draft on the Civitas Google Form. Click here to sign up.
  • All delegates should begin country research. There are two helpful worksheets of basic research questions on our website under Resources to help get started. Begin paying attention to current events in your country.
  • Schedule a visit from Stephanie to your group or club to answer questions and review the delegate handbook. This is optional, but very helpful.
  • Write a resolution on an issue that concerns you, using the helpful resources and samples on our website. Writing a resolution is also optional, but we do like to have at least one per school submitted.
  • Attend the optional Resolution Writing drop-in workshop in the Civitas office on Saturday, November 13. You can also get feedback on resolution drafts via email.
  • Submit final resolutions (via email) NO LATER THAN the Wednesday evening before your MUN session. We must have time to put all resolutions together for final printing to provide at the MUN session.
  • Attend your Session! Dress code is business casual. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to check -in and get settled.
Resolutions due by Wed., Nov. 17 for Model UN Session A (9:00 am-12:00 pm) on Saturday, November 20 at Webster University (same location as country draft).
Resolutions due by Wed., Dec. 1 for Model UN Session C (9:00 am-12:00 pm) on Saturday, December 4, via ZOOM.
Resolutions due by Wed., Dec. 8 for Model UN Session D (9:00 am-12:00 pm) on Saturday, December 11 at Webster University.

Join Civitas this Sat., Oct. 16 for a Cherokee Street Tour (& FREE Lunch!)
We have a very exciting morning planned for this Saturday, October 16 from 10:00 am until 1:30 pm. Randy Vines, co-owner (with his twin brother, Jeff) of StL Style House is going to lead Civitas students on a tour of the eclectic, vibrant Cherokee Street in south St. Louis. Known for decades for its numerous Latinx bakeries and restaurants and an impressive row of antique stores, Cherokee offers many additional reasons to visit (and live!) there. Randy, a frequent and gracious tour guide of Cherokee, will share his knowledge and love of the area as a business owner; he also has community organizers, entrepreneurs, and others with a passion for Cherokee Street who plan to chat with us during our tour, including:

Ley Malone--career entrepreneur
Matt Brinkmann--Pianos for People organizer
Pacia Anderson--Love Bank Park creator and promoter
Minerva Lopez--Hispanic community leader
Kaveh Razani--Art Place owner and artist promoter
And more!

We will break for lunch about 11:30 at Taqueria El Bronco (click here for menu). Lunch for all participants will be covered by Civitas.

The tour will begin at 10:00 am at StL Style House (northeast corner of South Compton Ave. and Cherokee St. at 3159 Cherokee St., St. Louis, 63118) and end about 1:30 pm at StL Style House. Parking is usually pretty plentiful on side streets nearby.

Click here to sign up! Space will be limited. This would be a great event to bring a friend interested in learning more about what Civitas offers. Just have them sign up.
(As a follow-up to the Cherokee Street tour, Parkway West senior and Civitas intern, Santiago Lugo Gutierrez will share his dynamic presentation, "Understanding Latinx & Latin-American Racial and Ethnic Differences" on Saturday, November 6. Stay tuned for details!)

UN Day Celebration on Sat., Oct. 23

The United Nations Association of St. Louis is hosting an exciting morning (10:00 am-12:00 pm) on Saturday, October 23 to honor the United Nations. The Keynote Speaker will be Chandrima Das, the Senior Director of Peace and Security Policy at the Better World Campaign, the advocacy arm of the UN Foundation. Chandrima will talk about UN Peacekeeping operations currently in place and share her expertise on conflict resolution.

Igho Ekakitie, a graduate student majoring in International/Global Studies at Webster University, will facilitate the morning's agenda. Born in the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria, in a small town called Sapele, Igho came to the U.S. for high school, undergraduate school, and now graduate school. He has served as a delegate at the United Nations Youth Assembly and is currently a board member of UNA-StL. And in all of his spare time, he also hosts a podcast. Click here to check it out!

The morning will also include live performances, awards to local people working towards UN goals, and more.

The UN Day (morning) celebration on October 23 will be held on the Webster University campus.

Pulitzer Center Contest for Students grades K-12:
Writing Letters to Government Officials

Students are invited to make their voices heard this election season by writing a letter to an elected representative that summarizes a global issue, explains how it connects to their local community, and proposes a solution. Through this contest, students can practice persuasive writing, civic action, and global citizenship, all while exploring the underreported issues that matter to them.

  • Eligibility: Any current K-12 student in the United States or globally may enter. Letters may be written in English and/or Spanish. High school, middle school, and elementary entries will be judged separately.
  • Prizes: First place winners will receive $100 to support global community engagement in the classroom (prize distributed to the class teacher). Winners and finalists will have their letters, photos, and bios featured on the Pulitzer Center website.
  • Deadline: Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 11:59pm EST

Please visit pulitzercenter.org/LocalLetters for complete contest guidelines, and resources including a step-by-step graphic organizer, evaluation rubric, and introductory slide presentation.
