TOWN & GOWN PLAYERS PRESENT
Athens Vignettes
Writer: Roshaunda Breeden
Director: Freda Scott Giles
October 15 to 24, 2021

(Streaming tickets available for October 22 to 24, 2021)

Town & Gown Players introduces the premier production of Roshaunda Breeden’s production of Athens Vignettes: A Dialogue with the African American Community. The production is directed by Dr. Freda Scott Giles, Associate Professor of Theatre and the Institute for African American Studies at UGA. Playwright Roshaunda Breeden has taken interviews with Athens community members and crafted them into three powerful scenes that express views from the African American community in Athens. There is a great deal about the history of Athens and UGA that has not been comprehensively addressed, and the Athens community — particularly the African American community — generally sees itself as not being truly heard by UGA.

The three powerful scenes cover Baldwin Hall burial site, the loss of Linnentown, and the often fraught relationship between the African American segment of the Athens area and the UGA community. After each scene, there will be an open dialogue with the audience. Town & Gown and Director Dr. Giles hopes that through this production the African American community will feel listened to and heard, leading to better communication, comprehension, and problem solving between the African-American community, Athens communities, and UGA. Additionally, Town & Gown hopes to forge new engagement from members of the Athens community as both audience members and participants in theatrical productions. “We are actively creating a more inclusive environment through community outreach and dialogue,” says Town & Gown President Nathan Altman.

For the safety of our community, Town & Gown requires all cast and crew members to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. All audience members attending in-person shows will be required to show proof of vaccination and wear a mask whenever inside the theater.

Synopsis: 15-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain: He is an exceptional mathematician but struggles to interact in a social setting. Because of his inability to interact well with others, he stays isolated, never venturing alone beyond the end of his road. He shies away from human contact, and is wary of strangers.  Seven minutes after midnight, Christopher stands next to Wellington, the neighbor’s dog, speared with a garden fork.  Dead. As a person of interest in the case, Christopher now has to stretch beyond his comfortable boundaries to answer intrusive and nagging questions.  However, like a young Sherlock Holmes, he is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington, and he carefully records each fact of the crime. Going against his overprotective father’s wishes, the case takes Christopher on a thrilling journey of self-discovery that upturns his world.

THEATER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

It's been a long time but we are looking for usher help for the upcoming performances of Athens Vignettes. To attend a Town & Gown performance, all volunteers and audience members must provide proof of vaccination, with the final shot occurring 2 weeks before the performance they wish to attend.  Also, you will need to wear a mask while indoors.

The Board Member on Duty will be checking vaccination cards for these performances so we would need a vaccinated usher to help guide guests to their seats. If you meet these requirements and would like to help please sign up at the following link.
