Successfully launched the state-wide Project HEALINGS

On October 16, 36 representatives from state-wide Black, Indigenous, and other persons of color (BIPOC) community-based agencies, got together to kick off Project HEALINGS at Rochester, MN, and launch a year-long vaccination mobilization effort.

Asian Media Access is oneof the organizers that join the PRoject HEALINGS to support the community engagement process to bring better and accurate information to Asian American and Pacific Islanders in Minnesota.

Project HEALINGS (Health Education and Adult Learning Incorporated with Navigating Government Systems) was created as a HUB for improved health and wellness among Minnesotans disenfranchised by identity and circumstance, facing disparities in both healthcare access and health outcomes, and impacted disproportionately by the COVID-19 pandemic.

HEALINGS is about vaccination, but it is also about connectivity, trust, and systemic change designed intentionally to end inequities for BIPOC living here in Minnesota, with below strategies:

•    Strategy #1: Detailing Barriers to Vaccine Uptake – ASSESSMENT.

•    Strategy #2: Equipping Cultural Influential Messengers – TRAINING.

•    Strategy #3: Increased Vaccination Sites’ Overall Understating of Cultural Hesitancy toward Vaccination – INFORMATION SHARING.

•    Strategy #4: Developing Culturally/Linguistically Appropriate Communication Products – MESSAGE CREATION.

•    Strategy #5: Campaigns to Promote Vaccinations – CAMPAIGNS FOR TARGETED BIPOC COMMUNITIES.

Youth Spotlight: Mya Hilleurd

Mya Hillerud discovered Asian Media Access with her family when they saw a live dance performance hosted by AMA a few years ago. Mya was impressed with the technical and physical movements of the dancers and from there has continued to be engaged with different AMA youth programs since.

In addition to AMA's Multimedia camps, Mya has most recently participated in several AMA Youth Sessions. Mya also extends her advocacy in the Youth sessions. In these sessions, participants are encouraged to be advocates for a variety of issues such as Mental Health, Smoking Prevention, and Bicultural Healthy Living. Every Friday for 13 weeks, youth gathered on zoom to gain more knowledge on the topics and share their outlooks and experiences with others.

Mya says, “It’s been a really nice way to feel in touch with the Asian community during the pandemic when I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to”. As a virtual opportunity, there are youths all around the states connecting and taking part in these discussions. This also allowed for Mya to learn about new opinions and experiences from others with similar backgrounds as herself.  Mya continually showed great openness in group sessions, providing valuable insights and connections on the discussion topics. She is also a consistent winner in the Youth Session Kahoot games. Mya plans to continue to be involved with new upcoming youth sessions and other AMA programs in the future.

Mya currently attends Gustavus Adolphus College and hopes to become an imagineer at Disneyland and create incredible attractions with cutting edge technology. In her free time, Mya enjoys playing badminton, composing music, and spending time with her sister.

Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART)

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, November 2, 2021,1:00 PM – 2:00 PM CDT
PLACE: Register https://smart1.eventbrite.com

Join MPRC and the MN ATOD Regional Prevention Coordinators for session 1 of Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART), a four-module immersion in the SMART program proven in over 30 clinical trials to improve resilience, stress, anxiety, happiness, wellbeing, mindfulness, and health behaviors.

The training addresses two aspects of human experience – attention and interpretation. Research shows that our brain’s attention, in its default state, incessantly wanders and instinctively focuses on threats and imperfections. This excessive ‘dwell time’ in the default mode correlates with symptoms of anxiety, depression, low engagement, and attention deficit. It also fatigues our brain.

SMART offers a way out of this human dilemma by engaging the brain’s focused mode – not only to experience more uplifting emotions, but also develop better focus, enhance creativity and productivity, improve engagement at work, deepen relationships, and to find greater purpose in life.

Revolutionary Bodies: Rethinking Contemporary Chinese Dance Culture

DATE/TIME: Thursday, November 11, 2021, 11:30am – 1:00pm
PLACE: Online, Please RSVP to hnwilcox@stkate.edu, if you plan to attend in person, or if you need a zoom link for virtual participation.

In this talk Wilcox will discuss her recent book, the first English-language primary source–based history of concert dance in the People’s Republic of China, which will be published in Chinese translation in late 2021. Combining over a decade of ethnographic and archival research, Revolutionary Bodies analyzes major dance works by Chinese choreographers staged over an eighty-year period from 1935 to 2015, examining connections between socialist thought, cultural institutions, and transnational exchange as they relate to dance creation, education, and theory.

Using previously unexamined film footage, photographic documentation, performance programs, and other historical and contemporary sources, Wilcox challenges the commonly accepted view that Soviet-inspired revolutionary ballets are the primary legacy of the socialist era in China’s dance field and instead presents the contemporary practice of Chinese dance (Zhongguo wu 中國舞) as the era's major creative project.

Commercial banking and lending institutions play a critical role in building individual and family wealth. Bankers and loan officers are the first introduction many people have to financial tools and concepts such as personal loans, investments, and refinancing. Too often banks miss opportunities for clients—as well as for themselves—when they deny people of color access points to wealth building tools like IRAs, lines of credit, investment vehicles, budgeting and tax strategies, and financial pathways to home ownership.

Moderated by award-winning Twin Cities certified financial educator and CEO of SLAP Financial Consulting, LLC Tonia Brinston, the conversation will examine the role financial institutions play in the long-term financial health and wealth of their clients and community. Hear from some of Minnesota's most influential advocates and experts on systemic barriers to wealth, as well as solutions like long-term, team-focused relationships between banks and clients and innovative financial literacy projects such as student run credit unions in Minnesota schools.
