Dear EMA community, 

This is a slightly different editorial as we will dedicate it to one person that has been pivotal to the work, projects and development of our EMAlumni Association for the past two years.
We are talking about our one and only Secretary General Gabriel Alves de Faria who is about to embark on another fascinating professional journey!

Dear Gabriel, 

Your enthusiasm, dedication and professionalism have been instrumental in leading our Association. You have filled our Board meetings with fresh ideas and laughter. You will be missed by all your friends in the EMAlumni Association Board, and there is no doubt that the broader EMA alumni community will miss your daily presence in driving us forward. You have convincingly worked for the EMA community because you care about it and we are excited that you will always be a part of it. It is after all a constant in your life now and forever.

We wish you all the best in your new endeavors and looking forward to seeing more from you.

EMALUMNI AWARD 2021


Ram Kumar Bhandari, winner of EMAlumni Award, 2021
 
We, in the EMAlumni Association, want to highlight and recognize the incredible work you can do and give a voice to human rights defenders. That is why the EMAlumni Association is proud to present the EMAlumni Award. This is the third year that we award it to an alum who has, and still is, making a significant contribution to the advancement of Human Rights and democracy.

This year's recipient of the EMAlumni Award is Ram Kumar Bhandari!
 
He was nominated and selected for his unwavering commitment to secure justice for conflict survivors in Nepal survivors and advocate for their rights. He has worked extensively with marginalised communities and their network (specially the families of the disappeared, victims of conflict, ex-combatants youth, ethnic minorities, rural women groups) in order to facilitate participatory action, research, and has developed campaign models and advocacy strategies that advance truth-telling, justice and social transformation.

The EMA Career Day took place on 23rd and 24th of September in Lido, Venice. More information on the annual Career Days we organise can be found here and the video from the meetings and discussions with the students here
 
BRUSSELS BOARD MEETING

Our in-person Board Meeting took place in Brussels in July! Most of the Board members made it to Brussels, however, some had to participate online. The meeting was an opportunity for the Board to look ahead on what projects we should work on for the benefit of the EMAlumni community in the coming year including conversations with alumni on relevant human rights topics, webinar series on careers in the human rights sector and support to the EMA programme. More to come!

Graduation Ceremony 2021

The Graduation Ceremony took place in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in September. All students graduated and have now become part of the alumni community. The EMAlumni Association welcomed them into the community and hopes that they will also play an active role in the Association.
 
Rights Forum 2021
 
On 12 October the Global Campus joins the #RightsForum21 with a session on ‘Empowering Digital Citizens of the Future’.
They will facilitate discussions on how to engage youth (under age 18) in becoming empowered agents in combating online mis- and disinformation. The session builds on the lessons learned in creating the MOOC on children’s rights in the digital age.

 
MOOC: Children’s Rights and Technology in the Digital Age

This MOOC will take a deep dive into just how often children are exposed to these futuristic, and sometimes problematic, technological developments and investigate what that means for a vulnerable group that may not fully understand the implications – be they positive or negative – or meaning of consent.
The course starts on 20 September and it is self-paced, available on edX.

5th EDITION OF THE GC POLICY OBSERVATORY PROGRAMME 
 
The policy observatory project aims to enhance the role of the Global Campus and its regional members in undertaking coordinated research initiatives and providing guidance and expert opinions in response to urgent human rights issues to a broad primary and secondary audience.

Applications are now open for its 5th edition. This year the Policy Observatory will revolve around Business and Human Rights. For more information read

Dr. Zoi Aliozi (2007) is the new Teaching Fellow at the European Master for Human Rights (Global Campus Europe). Congratulations Zoi!
 

 
Gabriel Alves de Faria (2013) is organising his first multimedia exhibition titled 'Je choisis Ma Lutte' or 'I Pick My Battle', featuring interviews, text, videos and pictures of more than 60 LGBTI+ rights defenders. The opening is on 12 October in Maison du Peuple De Saint Gilles, Brussels. The exhibition will be running until 10/11/2021.

Rémy Bonny (2019) was appointed Executive Director at Forbidden Colours, an NPO that collects and raises funds to support organizations that support LGBTI people. Congratulations!
 
Zahráa Khalil Badawi (2015) conducted an interview for the Vienna-based Metropole Magazine with Mr. Mouddar Khouja, Secretary-General of the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce (AACC), embarking on a journey of migration and exploring notions of home, roots, and building bridges between various societies and businesses. This interview is part of the reporting project “Home is where the Herz is”, aimed at giving a voice to the 10 largest communities who have made Vienna home, including the Syrian community. Meet the new members from the General Assembly 2021
 
Fionnuala Flynn (2014)

Originally a primary school teacher, following her E.MA internship she returned to Ireland where she worked in development and humanitarian project management. In 2019, she was deployed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in 2020 Fionnuala completed a diploma in Psychology with Dublin Business School, an area in which she has a keen interest. She has sang both for fun and professionally for many years in Ireland and elsewhere and loves music, travel, drawing and reading. She is currently based in Brussels and has taken up a new position in humanitarian advocacy.



Jessica Fiorelli (2016)
Jessica graduated from the EMA in 2016, after which she ventured to Brussels to work in policy and advocacy on a variety of issues including migration, poverty, social economy and most recently education and training. She’s incredibly passionate about social justice and is an ardent advocate for diversity and inclusion – which she’s currently pursuing a masters in.
