This Week's Spotlights

Special Message from Pastor Anna
Beloved,
James 5 says, "Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should have [the leaders] of the church pray over them. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up... Pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective."
Almost 5 years ago, I found myself accompanying my father to Ohio State for a meeting with specialists regarding his health. That was the first time the word "transplant" was mentioned in regards to his liver disease, but since then the day when we scheduled a liver transplant for him has been on my heart and mind.
Earlier this week I received a call from the Ohio State University Comprehensive Transplant Center that I have been approved to be a living liver donor for my father. After extensive testing, I am excited and nervous to be able to serve my dad in this way. Our surgery is scheduled for December 3, 2021. As with anything in this strange land of transplant conversations, nothing is ever certain. There is still the option for him to receive the gift of life from a deceased donor. There are a lot of factors that play into the Dec. 3rd date.
At present, my intention is to take a leave to recover from the procedure. I have worked and will continue to work with the Rev. Tim Bias, our District Superintendent, and Bishop Palmer to ensure that the needs of Linworth UMC are cared for, and it is my full intention to return in great health to ministry with you all as soon as possible. During my leave, however, I have full confidence that this staff (both pastoral and program/support staff) will care for you well and keep the ministry of Jesus Christ at and through Linworth UMC running well.
Because I know your hearts, I know that you're already thinking of what you can do. First and foremost, pray. Pray for my dad, our family, the doctors/nurses/caregivers at OSU, and for me. Also, I appreciate your patience with me as evolving information continues to come in and I make the necessary adjustments. As I steward my energy and wellness carefully so that I can be in the best shape possible before surgery, I will share updates with you as I am able. I am grateful to be serving such a grace-filled congregation who will continue to support my family during this challenging season.
This will not be the last you hear from me on this matter before my leave, so know that you'll get more updates when it is appropriate to share them. As always…
Draw the Circle Wide,
Pastor Anna
Our Money Story Sermon Series

We are invited to discover and tell our money stories in light of God's money story of liberation and justice. We will be invited to transform our stewardship practices into more full expressions of who we are and what we believe. This stewardship season, we invite you to remember, release, reimagine, restore, and recommit your money stories so that we can write the story God is begging us to live into.
Creative practice - we are creating a mural, and we'd love for you to participate!  There are two ways to be involved:
*Pick up a creative packet, complete your pieces, and either return them to worship, drop them off in the office, or arrange for a pick up.  We'd love for everyone to be involved!
*Join us for creative hour each week. We'll meet at the following times:
October 21 - 1 pm
October 27 - 6pm
Each of these sessions will also hold the opportunity for sharing in study scripture, prayer, and conversation!
Facebook Live - Join us at 11am on Wednesdays during October for scripture, prayer, and conversation!
Policy Update from Your Pastors:
At the most recent Administrative Council meeting, the team decided that we can pause/stop requiring registration for 10:30 worship.
We remain committed to caring for our neighbor:
Let's stay vigilant in our efforts to protect our community.  Please remember that any person over the age of two must “mask up” before entering our building, regardless of vaccination status, and remain masked for the duration of your stay in the building.  Masks are available if needed.
We are all called to the ministries of serving, caring, and connecting with one another safely. As Delta surges continue, may we change more and more into the likeness of Jesus.
Linworth Children's Center (LCC) Policy
We will be requiring all visitors, parents, and staff to be masked until recommendations by local health departments change. We strongly recommend that parents send KB and K students in masks. For below KB, masks will be parental choice.
Free At Home Covid Testing Kits
The City of Worthington has a supply of free take-home COVID-19 testing kits available to pick up at the Worthington Community Center. Kits can be picked up during open hours.  For more information please visit the website.

Year End Tax Planning Tips
Year End Tax Planning tips! Did you know that if you are 72 years old you are required to take a minimum distribution from your IRA and pay taxes on some or all of that distribution? However, you can avoid that tax by having those funds distributed directly to a qualifying charity. Donations of stock have the added benefit of giving you a tax deduction based on what the stock is selling for on the date of the gift, not what you paid for it. Finally, any prepayment of 2022 pledges could have an impact on your Tax Year 2021 tax situation. If you know you will be able to itemize your deductions for Tax Year 2021 and may not for 2022, consider prepaying a portion of your pledge. If you have any questions about these donation methods, please reach out to our Business Manager, Matthew Smith at business@linworthumc.org.

Funeral Announcement
In the early-morning hours of Friday, October 8, 2021, at Friendship Village of Columbus (now known as Westerwood), the Good Lord turned to the other heavenly angels and said, “Buckle up, here comes Maxine.” Our tell-it-like-it-is mom, Esther Maxine Holt Snouffer Bartelt, who was born 97 years ago on March 5, 1924 in Radnor, Ohio, is now in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior. She had gone through a very, very slow health decline but now is free to fly again with a renewed spirit and energized body.  On Saturday, October 16th the family will receive guests at the church starting at 12:30 outside in the portico area (north side or Columbarium side). The service will start at 1:30.
Please find her obituary here.

Message from Katie (Lorenz) Fetty & family

My parents, Byrdie and Stan Lorenz, my brother Joe, and I thank you for your loving support for us with your calls, text messages, cards, and prayers while my husband Andy was in the hospital critical care unit and afterwards. We know that your prayers helped us sense God's presence throughout the ordeal.  On the evening of the tenth day, Andy spoke briefly for the first time.  He assured me that all would be okay and that we would meet again.  The next morning, he died peacefully. We are so grateful for your love and prayers.

Sincerely, Katie (Lorenz) Fetty and family

Room 210 in the church is now available as a hybrid meeting space
If you or your committee/organization would like to learn more about the hybrid meeting technology in the room, please feel free to reach out. Matthew is more than happy to set up a time to show you how the system works and to get the room scheduled for your meetings through Stephanie, our office coordinator at office@linworthumc.org. If you and your committee prefer to continue exclusively on Zoom for now, we can come back to discuss this at another time. Do you have a student in 3rd or 4th grade? If so, we please fill out the digital registration form by Sunday, October 17.
Please note, we recognize you may not be able to join us that day. We still want to include your student and would love to get a Bible out to them early so we can include pictures of them with their Bible in worship.

If you have questions, please reach out to Pastor Brooke.

Trunk or Treat for all Ages!                                                             October 24, 3-5pm
Rain Date October 31, 3-5p

 Masks, strongly encouraged.

Trunk-or-Treat is just not for kids and families. At LUMC, it is so much more than kids dressing up and collecting candy. Trunk-or-Treat is an opportunity for the entire church family to gather in fellowship while inviting the community to join in on the fun. We never know how offering hospitality and Christian love to our neighbors might be the seed someone needs to begin a life of discipleship.
How can you help and be a part of this great event? We will need folks to decorate their trunks and hand out candy. As well as people willing to work hospitality and welcome stations. If you are unable to join the event, we will be collecting candy to use at the event. Finally, we ask for prayer that all those who attend, share and experience God’s love.
To signup to be a part of this fellowship event, register here or register at the kid’s registration area on Sunday.

Discipleship Baby Steps

Recently, while talking to a colleague about a project I was working on and feeling overwhelmed, I was reminded of how a baby learns to walk. It begins months before those first steps as infants strengthen and develop their leg muscles. The infants have no understanding of walking but they delight in standing on an adults’ lap bouncing up and down. As they continue to develop, they begin to crawl and soon find the edges of furniture and begin to pull themselves up and stand wabbly, holding on with both hands. We all know this progresses and the many stages that have to be learned before a baby can confidently toddle around.
I find it interesting that we adults, forget that learning something new, even discipleship, which is following and living out Jesus’ teachings, takes the purposeful plodding, stretching and strengthening our faith. In this COVID-19 season we have had to put some of our favorite ways to serve on hold but discipleship; acts of compassion, justice, worship and devotion continue.
How are your discipleship muscles doing? If COVID didn’t exist, many of you would be stretching your discipleship muscles, preparing to welcome our neighbors in to shop and fellowship at the fall garage sale. Actually, about 1,000 hours of discipleship would be strengthened through this event. WOW!
Here is the challenge, we can recognize our sadness of missing out on another event. But we also can reinvest those hours into other discipleship opportunities. How, you ask? Connect in worship, in person or online. If you haven’t seen someone connect for a while, reach out to them. Prayer and reading, devote 15-20 minutes a day to intentionally being with God. Be open to new ways to serve such as participating at Trunk or Treat, joining the children’s Sunday school team, or greeting on Sunday mornings. Finally, join a small group. We are slowly bringing back in person gatherings and equipping our space for hybrid events. Please let Pastor Brooke or your clergy team know you are interested in joining in. However you choose to strengthen you discipleship muscles, remember, it is baby steps. Each and every baby step will help you grow in you live out your commitment to Jesus Christ in discipleship.
Blessings, Pastor Brooke

 Hilltop Community

Linworth’s support of our ministry work in the Hilltop area of Columbus helps us partner with diverse groups such as Burroughs Elementary School, Celebrate One’s initiative for the well health of newborns and under 1s, the Highlands Youth Garden, Ville on the Hill support for elderly people, fresh produce markets and free lending libraries, and various initiatives through the Shalom Zone.
We are looking forward to getting back in the neighborhood sometime soon and are always open to new ideas on how to serve.  If you are looking for a place to share your talents and your ministerial service, and would like to know more, please contact Laurie Sandall 614-329-1508 or Pastor Sara pastorsara@linworthumc.org

New Volunteer Opportunity

We have an opportunity to assist in classrooms at W. Broad ES.   Our Hilltop ministry has a good relationship with WBES, including the school being a site for produce distributions,  cohosting dinners, providing financial and clothing assistance as needed, partnering for summer reading programs, as well as helping with volunteers during the school year. If you are interested in this wonderful ministry, please contact Cindy Leonard cleonard6586@columbus.k12.oh.us (volunteer coordinator). Or you may also contact Pastor Sara for more information.
