Join HLPA’s own Dr. Belkys Torres as she moderates a panel as part of Friday’s Latinx Connect Conference programming. This panel will feature research, teaching, service and community engagement advanced by Pitt faculty, staff and alumni in service of local Latinx populations. We will discuss the impactful research led by Pitt’s Director of Latinx Research and Outreach; follow how the Innovation Institute supports immigrant/international entrepreneurs who are newcomers to the Pittsburgh region and want to open their own businesses; and learn how a Pitt alum founded and oversees the Latino Community Center to serve Latinx children through education and family services. We will call the audience to action and offer opportunities to engaging with these organizations and the communities they serve. For more information, click "HERE"

Grannies Respond - Abuelas Responden
Grannies Respond is a national organization that hosts a network of cities around the U.S. where asylum-seekers are traveling through Bus Stations en route to their sponsored families.  Because Pittsburgh did not have such a program, we are creating a "stop".

We are looking for Spanish-speaking volunteers to meet buses that come in daily.  Volunteers can help as much or as little as they like - on a schedule or "as needed".  We often get advance notice of who's coming and what their needs are.  Mostly we are a friendly presence, help them understand their tickets, give out supplies such as snacks, drink, diapers, toiletries, etc. and make sure they're safely on their way to their next stop.

We require a 1-hour training and 2 observations at the Greyhound Bus Terminal with experienced volunteers.
