Hello, my name is Martje Wijers and I just started as an assistant professor (UD) at Scandinavian studies. I was already teaching several courses at the UvA the last couple of years, but I’m excited that, besides my teaching, I will have the opportunity to do research again and to be a full member of the team. My research will be on computational linguistics and literary studies, meaning I’m going to use my linguistic knowledge and skills on literary texts.
I’m originally from the south of the Netherlands (Brabant) and after studying in Amsterdam (I did the MA Scandinavian studies and rMA linguistics at the UvA), I drifted further down south to get my PhD and teach at Ghent university in Belgium. Being back at my Alma Mater feels a little bit like coming home.
In my free time, I enjoy writing and performing poetry (fun/braggy fact: last year I became Dutch national champion in poetry slam). I currently live in Utrecht with my partner and our little son of 5 months, who I’m enjoying lots of my free time with these days. You can find me in room 6.10 in the PC Hoofthuis most days.
