Dear FARA/Murujuga supporters,                                                        October 2021

Firstly, many thanks to all those who sent in appeals against the EPA’s decision to allow Perdaman to add further to the industrial pollution on the Burrup. I believe the response was noteworthy and FARA has been called in this week to meet further with the Appeals Convenor… so keep fingers crossed.

There are a number of developments and events (not all WA-based) I’d like to bring to your attention -

Say NO to Scarborough: Mobilise to Win
Uniting Church in the City, 97 William Street, cnr Hay, Perth
Join us to stop Woodside's Scarborough gas project. With Brookfield recently withdrawing its finance from the Woodside project, we have the best opportunity in the coming weeks to ensure that Scarborough gas is kept in the ground forever.
To do so, we need to rapidly scale up our movement. Your skills, networks and passions are needed to prevent one of Australia's most polluting projects from going ahead.
Please join our workshop to grow this creative, broad and diverse movement and say NO to Scarborough gas. Register here - https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/say-no-to-scarborough-mobilise-to-win-tickets-182368096887

MONDAY, OCTOBER 18Senate Enquiry report on Juukan Gorge due out!
The 2020 Rio Tinto destruction of 46,000-year-old rock caves in the Pilbara sent shockwaves around the world. It wasn’t the first event of its kind, and it won’t be the last. Read the report and write to Stephen Dawson, WA Aboriginal Affairs Minister, reminding him of his responsibility to prevent the equally criminal destruction of Murujuga’s ancient rock art - minister.dawson@dpc.wa.gov.au

Landmark Legal Case: UN Scrutiny for WA Cultural Heritage Bill after First
Nations Referral

The Environmental Defenders’ Office (EDO) has assisted a group of First Nations people to make a formal request for a United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to review Western Australia’s draft proposed cultural heritage bill, arguing the bill is incompatible with Australia’s international obligations on racial discrimination.
This request by WA Aboriginal leaders Slim Parker, Kado Muir, Dr Anne Poelina, Clayton Lewis and Dr Hannah McGlade, has just been lodged as it is expected that the formal Bill will be tabled in the WA Parliament in the very near future:  https://www.edo.org.au/2021/09/10/un-scrutiny-for-wa-cultural-heritage-bill-after-first-nations-referral/

Protect Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Walk
Let's CELEBRATE our culture. Not destroy it.
Australia’s cultural heritage is being harmed or destroyed every day and it is vital that the WA Aboriginal Heritage Bill is re-written so that it properly protects Aboriginal heritage instead of enabling greedy industrial interests.
