Haringey Global Entrepreneurship Week 2021

Haringey Global Entrepreneurship Week 2021

Every year in November, Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) aims to promote originality, creativity and ingenuity through local and global business support networks and activities. It involves 10 million people and 35,000 events in over 100 countries.

GEW 2021 serves as an opportunity to collaborate and engage with organisations and individuals to celebrate and spotlight entrepreneurs, expose people to the path of entrepreneurship, help them get started and facilitate access to the resources they need to succeed.

This year GEW will take place from Monday 8 November until Sunday 14 November.

To mark its return, the council will be delivering an engaging week-long programme of events as part of Haringey Global Entrepreneurship Week 2021.

The Haringey Economic Development team and Start-ups in London Libraries (SiLL), in partnership with local, regional and national support agencies and institutions, have organised a packed programme of practical support.

Local business support events, workshops and 1:1 advice clinics will be taking place both online and in person. The week will also feature 2 events to launch and close the week that will showcase successful local businesses who have taken part in the recent Haringey Good Economy Recovery Plan programmes.

The webinar will briefly touch on requirements around products of animal origin, plant products, composite products, prepared food stuffs, beverages and organics, and look at the upcoming rule changes and expiry of grace periods.

Ultra Low Emission Zone expands into Haringey on Monday - is your business ready?

The ULEZ is expandingFrom Monday (25 October), the central London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is expanding to create a single, larger zone up to – but not including – the North (A406) and South Circular (A205).

The new ULEZ will cover ALL of the Haringey borough and will have an impact on local businesses.

The new ULEZ will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends (except Christmas Day). A £12.50 daily charge will apply when driving within, and into, the expanded zone.

Whilst 4 out of 5 cars already meet the ULEZ emissions standards, owners of the remaining polluting cars, motorcycles, lighter vans and minibuses will still need to take action before this expansion comes into effect.

The Cross River Partnership (CRP) has created Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) guidance to aid resident and business vehicle owners on the next steps to meet the emission standards (Euro 4 for petrol cars and Euro 6 for diesel cars).

The guidance provides straightforward advice and signposting for electric vehicle leasing and buying options, funding opportunities and financial incentives, as well as tools that can help in transitioning to cleaner modes of transport for personal and business journeys.

The CRP has also created a simple breakdown of the financial costs (PDF, 1.8MB) associated with continuing to drive a vehicle that does not meet the ULEZ (or LEZ) standards.

To check your vehicle meets the ULEZ emissions standards, and to view the interactive map of the zone, visit the Transport for London (TfL) website.

Flood prevention in Haringey

Staff working on flooded streetThe council works hard to protect Haringey businesses and residents from the risks of flooding. The 2 incidents that took place earlier this year highlight just how important this work is.

The areas that were affected the most in the flooding incidents this summer have been made the top priority, with many areas already attended, including town centres.

A significant part of the flood prevention works is cleansing and maintaining gullies throughout the borough to ensure rainwater can freely enter the drainage system. In partnership with Marlborough Highways, the Council has invested in the purchase of 2 new gully cleansing vehicles which will make the maintenance programme much more efficient by allowing a wide range of problems to be resolved in one visit.

This investment will ensure that all 15,000 gullies in Haringey are cleansed at least once by the end of March 2022.

The way that the council carries out its maintenance programme is changing, with all gullies throughout the borough being cleaned annually, and additional cleansing carried out in busy areas such as the town centres.

How businesses can help

Businesses can support the maintenance programme by ensuring you abide by the parking suspension notices, and ask your customers to do the same. This will allow access and ensure your local gully is cleaned.

Ensuring customers don’t leave litter on the ground, clearing up any building rubble and not pouring oil or leftover wet concrete down a gully or drain can also help prevent your local gully becoming blocked and help minimise the risk of flooding.

New timetable for introducing UK Border controls

The border with the EU - Importing and exporting goodsThe government recently set out a new timetable for introducing measures on goods being imported from the EU to the UK due to the effects the pandemic has had to global supply chains.

The government has postponed some of the import controls that were due to be introduced in October to give businesses more time to adjust. Businesses will now have more time to prepare for these controls which will be phased in throughout 2022.

Under the revised timetable:

  • the requirements for pre-notification of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) goods, which were due to be introduced on 1 October 2021, will now be introduced on 1 January 2022.
  • the new requirements for Export Health Certificates will now be introduced on 1 July 2022.
  • Phytosanitary Certificates and physical checks on SPS goods at Border Control Posts, due to be introduced on 1 January 2022, will now be introduced on 1 July 2022.
  • Safety and Security declarations on imports will be required as of 1 July 2022 as opposed to 1 January 2022.

The journey to Net Zero

FSB Experts in BusinessAs the COP26 climate talks take place in the UK this November, this event provides a perfect opportunity to explore the significant role small businesses will play in the transition to Net-Zero.

Climate change and the need to adapt to a host of associated threats is the single biggest challenge of our generation.

Changing weather, issues around supply chains, energy price volatility, access to technology, water stress, employment, skills and equality rights – all of these issues linked to climate change and the move to a low-carbon economy will begin to press down on small businesses across the globe.

UK SMEs will feel the effects - many already are - so there is an urgent need to adapt and mitigate. There are also vast and exciting opportunities for SMEs to be found along the journey to Net-Zero.

This event is free and open to all businesses regardless of where they are based. Both FSB members and non-members are welcome to attend.
