What's buzzing at EarthLinks?

The warm weather is fading, but our garden still has much to give! Follow along for some of recent exciting updates from the EarthLinks Community.

New Participant Orientation

Individuals wanting to be a Participant in the Workshop Program at EarthLinks must go through Orientation which is held quarterly. Once completing Orientation, a new participant is eligible to be paid for coming to work one morning which may involve making crafts, working in our organic gardens, arranging flowers, making body products, etc. They are also eligible to receive regular case management, go on monthly nature trips, participate in our educational and recreational afternoon classes, and more!

Here are the details on the upcoming Orientation:
  • Call-in times to register for a spot in our upcoming Orientation is from 8am sharp until 4pm that afternoon of Monday, Oct. 25th.  At that time, folks will be interviewed as to their current living situation, their income, how long they have been homeless, etc.  Call: 303-389-0085
  • To qualify: folks need to have an income under $1080 per month and have experienced homelessness either now or in the recent past. This would include persons living in shelters, in their vehicles, or living temporarily between family and friends. We will determine by Wednesday who will be accepted into this quarter's Orientation and will notify those who have been chosen to begin orientation as well as call those who were not selected.
  • The dates for our orientation sessions are TBD. It is required that prospective Participants be able to make all three Orientation sessions. Missed sessions will disqualify a person from this Orientation period with rare exception. We ask that those chosen for Orientation make arrangements to be present for all three days.

Humans of EarthLinks

By Kathryn Keyes
This month we celebrate Sherrydon!
Sherrydon grew up in Aurora with big sister Gabrielle and a younger brother. As a child, she really enjoyed her family’s annual trips to special places like New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns, Wyoming’s Yellowstone, and Colorado’s Mesa Verde, Sand Dunes and other memorable spots. They even drove down to the Texas panhandle every year for Christmas to visit their grandmother and a ton of cousins, until her mom finally said “Enough!” to all that snow along the way. Her dad worked at the Brown Palace Hotel for 46 years and it was a real treat for them to go and visit him. She especially loves her memories of Christmas and “High Tea”. She says, “my parents were so good… I really loved them.”

Sherry’s favorite subject in school was history and she always wanted to be an archeologist. She joined ROTC for four years in high school. She’s had health challenges throughout her life, but that did not deter her from pursuing her passions. Thankfully, she is currently in remission! She would have loved to have gone back to school to study landscape management. She has daylilies, Christmas cactus, and a cabbage plant growing in her bathroom. The garden at EarthLinks is still her favorite thing; she has been coming to EL for over 8 years, and has served on the Leadership Team for about 5 years.

Her idea of relaxing is sitting on a park bench while painting or drawing with no one around (except for geese and squirrels). Sherrydon is a serious crafter and makes “miniatures” to sell in craft shows. She says, “if it wasn’t for my imagination, I don’t know where I’d be!” She is still interested in learning and often watches Nova, National Geographic, YouTube, the History Channel, and she even got into genealogy before computers.

**A huge thank you to Sherrydon, for your vulnerability, kindness, and wise words. And thank you to Kathryn, for facilitating this interview and segment.**
