Disappointment With God
( Romans 8 )
In 2015, Philip Yancey wrote a book entitled Disappointment with God. It addresses the very real pain some feel when God seems to be unfair or seems to be missing in our time of need or silent when we cry out to Him. Many of us have had those feelings, only to recognize that God was there all along – that God was always listening. He was doing a work even when we did not see Him working at all. Others have walked away, blaming God for their sorrows and suffering, and refusing to walk with Him again.
When we study through Romans 8, it seems absurd to be disappointed with God in the light of what He has done for us. What is there to be upset about? He sent His Son to die in our place that we might escape His just wrath. He sent His Spirit to free us from our own self-destructive natures and empower us to walk with Him. He has adopted us into His family and given us the privilege of being joint heirs with Christ. He helps us in our prayers when our own ability to communicate falls short. He controls every single thing in the universe, causing everything to work to our benefit and to conform us into the image of His dear Son. He has set His undying affection on us so that we will never be separated from Him.
If we are disappointed, it is not a problem on God’s part, but a problem of our own misunderstanding, ignorance, or selfish desire. Maybe we are upset with God because He did not give us our way. We do not trust that He has a better plan for us than we can imagine. The cure for this is to turn our gaze from ourselves unto Him, and to remember the incredible things He has done and IS doing. Then we will be free once again to enjoy the wonderful things God is doing and enjoy this incredible blessing He has bestowed upon us. If you find yourself disappointed with God, read Romans 8 once again, and consider the reality of His amazing love for you and faithfulness to you, and turn once again to His amazing love for you in His dear Son.
