Dear colleagues,

We have more good news. 33 colleagues who were paid late have paychecks today with the penalties due to them by law. Your collective power made this happen. Those who attended Wednesday’s board meeting heard teachers speaking from their heart about the impact of this difficult year - difficulties only amplified by uncertainty about paychecks. This is an immediate need for our hard working teachers and we are glad to see it being addressed.
Make sure everyone is in the loop:
Please pass on this information to your colleagues, particularly new staff who may not be aware and who may not be on our contact list yet. Have them subscribe and get more involved here:

For staff who were paid late:

Today union officers received communication from administration that 33 staff members have checks available for the penalties due to them due to missing or late paychecks. (Impacted staff got an email from HR on Friday, October 29th, notifying them that a check was available to be picked up. Checks will be mailed for those who could not pick them up.)

The description attached to the supplemental checks states "Sec 210 penalty," referring to the California labor code that protects employees’ rights to be paid on time:
  • For any initial violation, one hundred dollars ($100) for each failure to pay each employee.
  • For each subsequent violation, or any willful or intentional violation, two hundred dollars ($200) for each failure to pay each employee, plus 25 percent of the amount unlawfully withheld.
If you were paid late and did not get a penalty paid to you yet, we recommend you reach out again to the HR department (hr@hightechhigh.org.) If you would like support from the union and CTA lawyers on following up on these issues, we recommend copying the union email (htedcollective@gmail.com) on your emails to HR. See our suggested language below:

For staff working as full time teachers and being paid as subs:

HTEC officers are in communication with administration about these situations and the possibilities of retroactive pay in the case of delayed credentials. We believe everyone deserves to be compensated for their work.

We hope to have an update soon with more information, but in the meantime we recommend you reach out to HR (hr@hightechhigh.org) and copy the union email (htedcollective@gmail.com) with this suggested language.

We are stronger as a collective.

Though it is heartbreaking to hear the struggles that educators are experiencing, it was also so inspiring this past Wednesday to see so many people show up at the board meeting showing their support for our union and for our bargaining platform. Together, we are stronger, and we look forward to beginning the bargaining process.

In solidarity,

The High Tech Education Collective
