For an emerging animal photojournalist, it can be difficult to get funding and guidance to document animal stories. Who pays for the large costs associated with an investigation? Who advises an APJ who has skill and some experience on story development, technique and promotion?

Well now, we do. For the first time ever there is now an Animal Photojournalism Fellowship. One Fellow will receive $6,400CAD to work remotely with Jo-Anne and the WAM team starting January 2022 to complete a project about farmed animals. Applications close Nov. 14th.

WAM on Medium

We tell animal stories and while the camera is our primary method it’s not our only method. That’s why we’re launching on Medium, where we’ll be publishing articles by Jo-Anne and other expert animal photojournalists; by animal advocates and activists; by artists, philosophers and reporters.

Our first article, by yours truly, is a short introduction to us. The second, by journalist and photographer Graeme Green, is about the impacts of photo-activism on animal lives. Join us on Medium where you can read, react to and follow our written stories.

Adam Oswell and WAM

Have you seen the stunning photographs from this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year? One in particular stands out for us: Adam Oswell’s “The Elephant in the Room,” winner in Wildlife Photojournalism.

This photograph is in HIDDEN and Adam has just licensed more than 100 images to us from his piercing conservation photography. And in December this vital work continues: Adam will be on assignment for us in Thailand, documenting how the pandemic has affected elephants used in tourism.

Did you know that you can make a difference for animals not only in your lifetime, but through the legacy you leave behind?

“It was a no-brainer for me to include We Animals Media in my will. It's vital these images continue to be gathered for animal rights advocacy around the world and reassuring to know I'll still be helping after I'm gone.”
-Richard Hargreaves, UK wildlife lawyer.

Will you help us continue our mission as part of your legacy?

Yumin Chen on Unbound

This month the Unbound Project and WAM are featuring Yumin Chen, one of the most beloved and hard-working animal advocates in Taiwan, in a beautiful short film. For over 25 years she has been inspecting farms to help enforce and advise on welfare standards, as well as campaigning corporations and governments to implement anti-cruelty practices. Yumin is the Director of Environment & Animal Society of Taiwan, an organization we have worked with to document fish binding in Taiwan.

In Case You Missed It

Jo-Anne’s VII Insider Event

Earlier this month Jo-Anne joined renowned VII Insider to discuss the importance, challenges and opportunities of animal photojournalism. She traces her history in the early days of her animal photojournalism (before we called it that!) to what WAM has become now and the greater uptake in the media for APJ visuals compared to last decade.
