At last COP26 is here!

There is a lot of information everywhere about what will happen and what we can hope for as the world leaders get together in Glasgow with their targets to fight climate change. In the SLH team we hope we can have some optimism about what will happen, but let us see. Look here for more information.

This is an extra newsletter just to let you know about some of the events we thought you would like to know about locally on the eve of what is one of the biggest international events for many years! There are other activities going on, but these are the ones in our minds right now.

GREATER MANCHESTER GREEN SUMMIT

Some of the SLH team joined the Summit on 18th October at The Lowry. Andy Burnham outlined the aims for the region to become carbon neutral by 2038 - 12 years ahead of the national target. With representatives from all sections of society, it was inspiring to hear about all the exciting things going on in the northwest, although, of course, we always expect more!

If you want to know more detail about the plans for the future set out by Greater Manchester Combined Authority, look here.

COP26 NORTH WEST EVENT, TUESDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 9:30AM to 3:00PM, MAYFIELD DEPOT, MANCHESTER.

As global leaders gather at the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference, Power To The People: Enabling A Smart Energy Transition will examine the future for energy production and use in the North West.

This is an opportunity to join the people and organisations leading the charge towards net zero in discussions that could influence the lives of more than 7.3 million citizens in the region, and many more around the world. This event will hear from trailblazers, innovators and industry experts on smart energy and sustainable power. For more information and to register, go here.

STOCKPORT CAN - CLIMATE ACTION NOW SUMMIT, ON LINE 9TH NOVEMBER

In March 2019, Stockport Council declared a Climate Emergency and agreed an ambition to become carbon neutral by 2038. You can find more information here.

Do you want to know more about what is planned and to have your say about what needs to happen? Join in the Stockport CAN virtual summit by registering here:

HEATONS LIBRARY CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENT FEATURE

We are delighted that the staff at The Heatons library have worked with SLH to pull together a collection of books that  are truly the flavour of the month! We understand that the new display will be ready for viewing and browsing soon, so keep your eye on those library displays. We'll give you the tip off when we hear it's in place.

HEDGE MAINTENANCE

Hedge sessions are on the third Sunday of each month, and next will be Sunday 21st November 10am to 12 noon. To maintain our ancient hedge, we clear the area on either side, pick litter, and do all we can to help it to thrive. In October we planted lots of bulbs so watch for them growing in spring 2022!

Wear sturdy shoes and long sleeves and bring gloves, secateurs, shears and a trowel if you have them, although we will come with some equipment. The hedge is between Priestnall allotments and the recreation field, on the lane that links Trentham Avenue (SK4 3QD) and Mersey Road.

Everyone is welcome to pop along for as long as you wish. Contact info@slheatons.org if you want to know more.

HEATON MERSEY VILLAGE GARDEN

The gardening team meet to maintain this delightful small space on the fourth Tuesday and the second Sunday of the month 10.30am to 12.30pm, even in the winter!  Heaton Mersey Village Garden is opposite the set of shops that includes McColls and The Good Life, and next to the Sea Scouts hut and the car park on Didsbury Road. Bring gloves and small tools if you have them, although the team come with some equipment. More information from info@slheatons.org

The team would love to see any new faces and everyone is welcome to join in.

RECYCLE FOR GREATER MANCHESTER

It's worth keeping an eye on this website or getting their newsletter to find out all the new things going on in recycling locally! Check it out for how to get a bargain compost bin for the garden, the new Renew Shops opening through the region, how to waste less and lots more.

SLH MONTHLY MEETINGS

The SLH monthly meetings are usually on the first Saturday of the month, but please check our website for up to date information. .
The next meeting will be on 6th November 2021 10.30 - 11.45 am.

Everyone is welcome to our meeting. Contact info@slheatons.org if you have questions. We use the time to discuss and plan our activities, and have occasional guest speakers.  Do come and meet us!

We meet
at The Heatons Centre, next to Heatons Library, Thornfield Rd, SK4 3LD. The entrance is at the back of the centre, where you should ring the bell for the conference room. Hot drinks will be provided for everyone. It is a large well-ventilated room.

We are grateful to Stockport Signpost for Carers in allowing us the use of The Heatons Centre at a generous fee. Signpost for Carers (registered charity no: 1085727) owns and manages the use of the Heatons Centre. Surplus income generated from the use of this community space is used to support the wellbeing of those caring for friends and relatives across Stockport.
