Gifts to Inspire Neighborhood Activations

Gifting Season is upon us, so how about using Free The Museum as your gift-giving inspiration? (While you’re at it, maybe you should treat yourself too.)

Here are a few (somewhat randomly selected) ideas to get you started.

Books

Artful Rainwater Design by Stuart Echols and Eliza Pennypacker

Narrative Environments and Experience Design by Tricia Austin
Pervasive Games : Theory and Design by Markus Montola, Jaakko Stenros, Annika Waern
Lost Colors by David Whitemyer

Museum-inspired Gifts

Boxhibit: Identity from the Museum of Us
Tiny collections from The MiniMuseum

And we can't overlook buying a membership to a local museum, or to a virtual museum like the Design Museum Everywhere.

Gifts for Kids

Explorer's Kit from Le Jardin
Adventure Kit from Stem Cell Science Shop
Better yet!

Go DIY and put together a custom experience kit. Assemble the equipment for nature exploration or weather observations. Follow the example of Mr. Bones in the book, The Christmas Junk Box by Tony King and fill a box with odds and ends, a new tool or two, and some craft materials. Or, like artist Amy Brown, who co-created a small museum with kids in her apartment complex, take inspiration from Brian D. Collier's online collections database following his Classification System for Very Small Objects, and get the kids  making their own museum.
