Did You Know?

The Nonprofit Leadership Institute Graduated New Miller Fellows Into the Community

Did you know that more than 100 nonprofits are registered in Yellow Springs? For a village of fewer than 4000 residents, there is a considerable amount of nonprofit knowledge and experience in the world of philanthropy.

A focus on the world of philanthropy and grantmaking filled the most recent adaptation in the Miller Program's one-day Nonprofit Leadership Institute (NLI).

Students from Antioch College and Greene County high schools joined up for interactive learning and work sessions in a mix of zoom and a physically-distanced in-person work session and graduation ceremony on Saturday, October 23.

NLI panelists who shared their experiences in philanthropy and the Miller Program included Kevin McGruder of The 365 Project, Donna Haller of VIP, and Nathan Summers of the Antioch School, and Angel Harris, seasoned Miller Fellow.

Morgan Family Foundation Executive Director Lori Kuhn took students on a grantmaking journey filled with inspiration that has guided her own journey for more than two decades in philanthropy.

Beyond Zoom(!), students learned about nature preserve stewardship at Glen Helen during their work session with Ranger Susan Smith.

To wrap it up, on behalf of the Foundation's trustees, Joanne Lakomski celebrated the participants and their completion of the program. Additionally, she asked them to be conscious about how they choose to spend their time over the next 10 years with their new awareness of thinking about their "Why?"; their own purpose and the purposes of organizations doing work that is meaningful to them.

Which reminds us all about why we have the passion we do for and inphilanthropy.

One student evaluated the NLI by noting, "I feel like I learned how to see the world with joy again."

The Miller Program is beginning the 11th year, bringing students and older adults together in support of our local nonprofits. Thank you to the YSCF Encore Team for providing the framework for the NLI Program.

 Nonprofit News & Events

The Yellow Springs Community Children’s Center is celebrating the early stages of renovating the infant playground. Mallory Arter (a former parent of YSCCC and artist) painted a nature-based, vibrant mural on the outside wall. The next steps include levelling out the grounds, laying soft tiles on top of the dirt/rock area for safety, and purchasing developmentally appropriate playground equipment for our babies and waddlers.
