Hello kin!

We wanted to share a photo journal recap of our Performing Kinship event. The centerpiece of this event was a performance art piece, the first of hopefully many Kinship Plot art commissions. Formative artistry is one of our core motifs because we believe art has the power to unself us toward kinship, tell truth slant, reshape our emotions, cultivate attentiveness and wonder, and enable us to imagine new possibilities for kinship.

The evening began with attendees mingling and helping themselves to a variety of yummy, nourishing teas provided by the Pauline Apothecary Tea-Bar, which is much more than a tea bar!
Welcome! Steph set the stage with gratitude, orientation, introductions, and a vision for kinship, which you can read more about on our website.
Then it was time for the main event: Rev. de’Angelo Dia's performance art piece. Part-memoir, part-sermon, part-liturgy, part-lament, Dia's artful presentation invited us to explore the ancient concept and practice of kinship. It was a summons to be honest and true as we enter into the divine gift of kinship in today’s wounded world.
To help us process what we heard, Melanee Marshall led us in a creative response, weaving our own “kinship scapes.” Melanee invited us to let Dia’s words soak in, consider the directions of our own relationality, and imagine what practicing kinship might look like in those spheres. Some of us fumbled and had to start over multiple times, which was a fitting parable for what it might take to walk toward truth-full kinship with each other.

After some time to breathe and weave, Rev. Dia returned to the stage to engage in talkback and conversation. We are grateful for everyone who participated, attended, and joined in this opportunity to turn around, lament, listen deeply, reflect, and imagine. You can watch the whole evening by clicking here, and we would love to hear what was salient, what was surprising, and what you might be prompted to do.

Our best,
Steph and Wes for the Kinship Plot team
