A message from Dorothy McCoid....

A special thank you to all for your many prayers, cards, and calls that surely kept me going through my hospital stay and recovering at home. You all are truly God’s blessing.

Thank you again,
Dorothy
65th Anniversary Commemoration

During the first three weeks of November, we will be commemorating the 65th anniversary of the founding of Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church.
  • November 7th—All Saints Sunday—along with remembering loved ones who have died we will have a display of banners made or funded by Mt. Carmel members.
  • November 14th and 21st - we will have a “Wall of Wonder” along the gallery wall with designations for the decades of Mt. Carmel’s history. As part of our worship on these dates you will be invited to mark dates (births, baptisms, confirmations, weddings, funerals) and other life passages in your own history at Mt. Carmel. You are also asked to bring photos that may be put up on the wall of wonder. Also, on November 14, following the Adult Forum with an update fromt the Call Committee, we will have a barbeque hosted by the Road Kill Grill and featuring a musical performances by the SLO Strummers (Bob Grosse’s ukulele group). A free will offering will be collected at the barbeque to benefit CAT.
  • November 21 - the Adult Forum with feature remembrances by long-time Mt. Carmel members.
We hope you will join us for these times of giving thanks for Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church.

Photography from 10 Finalists in the Karimeh Abboud Award Competition

Palestine: Unlimited is an exhibition derived from a signature initiative of Dar Al Kalima University College of Arts and Culture in Bethlehem: a call to the best young photographers of Palestine to share interpretations of their country and its people. Here, ten finalists from the Karimeh Abboud Award Competition — named for a pioneering 20th century Palestinian female photographer — help us break through icons and stereotypes, in order to experience Palestine as it really is.
This Sunday, October 31 – Information on the PALESTINE: UNLIMITED exhibit of photography and a discussion on Palestine, the Christmas Lutheran Church and the Bright Stars of Bethlehem organization. If you have been to Palestine or the Holy Land, please join in with your observations.

Next Sunday, November 7 - Last in the series Inroducing ELCA Daily Discipleship Bible studies. The text is from Mark, Chapter 13.

We are reading Living Buddha, Living Christ by Vietnamese monk, Thich Nhat Hanh.

Buddha and Christ, perhaps the two most pivotal figures in the history of humankind, each left behind a legacy of teachings and practices that have shaped the lives of billions of people over two millennia. If they were to meet on the road today, what would each think of the other's spiritual views and practices?

Thich Nhat Hanh has been part of a decades-long dialogue between two great contemplative traditions, and brings to Christianity an appreciation of its beauty that could be conveyed only by an outsider. In lucid, meditative prose, he explores the crossroads of compassion and holiness at which the two traditions meet, and he reawakens our understanding of both. "On the altar in my hermitage," he says, "are images of Buddha and Jesus, and I touch both of them as my spiritual ancestors."
Preparing for the retaining wall
The constuction crew dug out the driveway on the uphill side of Mt. Carmel this week. This new hole you see in the photo will eventually be home to a retaining wall, driveway, sidewalk, and utilities.

We will continue to provide as much information as possible about the changes happening around us. Please contact John Cook or MaryAnn Jakes if you have any questions.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The harvest season has come to a close and food donations for Iglesia Santa Cruz are needed more than ever. The congregation at our sister church in Santa Maria is composed primarily of farm workers. As the harvest season on the Central Coast winds down, many find themselves making difficult decisions, which bills to pay, how much water to add to the soup, and whether or not to seek medical attention.

We can help alleviate some of the stress that comes from food insecurity by donating some of the basic food items listed below. The donation schedule is only a suggestion. All donations are welcome at any time and may be left in the shopping cart in the narthex. Your donations are delivered to Santa Maria each Friday along with the Whole Foods donation. If you need assistance bringing something in from your car, please call the church office at 805-544-2133. Thank you for your continued support.

1st Sundays - Rice & Beans
2nd Sundays - Masa & Oil
3rd Sundays - Sugar & Salt
4th Sundays - Laundry/Dish Soap & Pesonal hygeine items (men & women)
5th Sundays - Socks and Undies (All ages/genders)

Donations of gift cards are easy to purchase and easy to transport. All gift cards are presented to Pastor Esteban Salazar at Iglesia Santa Cruz. Pastor Salazar distributes the cards to different families each month, as needed.

Thrivent grants are always a blessing. Your Thrivent dollars are generally used to purchase items from the list above. Please contact Steve Bennett if you would like more information about Thrivent grants.
Volunteers from Mt. Carmel prepare and serve a hot lunch for The People's Kitchen program at 40 Prado on the first Friday of each month. Here is a list of our volunteers for Friday, November 5:

Entree - Karen Almas; Beryl & Sid Bennett; Linda Lex; Jan Uder; Sandy Rowland; Sheilah Tietje; Judy Tewell
Salad - Karen Bockelman; Diana Rheinisch
Canned Fruit - Rebecca Christensen; Ro Cannon-Miller
Milk - Sue Cummings

Please contact Jan Uder, or the church office at
info@mtcarmelslo.org if you are unable to serve this month, or if you would like information on volunteering in the future.

Matching Gifts Challenge Benefitting the SLO County Food Bank

The new donation site is up and running. Please click the link below for more information.

Link to Mt. Carmel matching funds page

If you prefer to donate to the matching funds challenge by check, make your check out to the SLO County Food Bank. Write Mt. Carmel Matching Funds Drive on the memo line so that your donation will be properly credited.  Mail to:

Food Bank Coalition of SLO County
1180 Kendall Road
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

Please do not route your food bank donations through Mount Carmel.  Doing so will delay your donation and make tracking the matching funds challenge donations difficult for the food bank.

Thank you to Mount Carmel for your always generous spirit!
