Sailboat BOB is due for a 5-year checkup and there is no better place than Bellingham, WA for work on sailboats. We teamed up with some adventurous folks to sail from Sitka to Ketchikan and then down through British Columbia in three weeks-ish.

Sitka to Ketchikan

We headed out of Sitka - with friends Dave, Lisa, Megan, and Travis - knowing there was a storm coming from the Gulf, and we'd need a snug spot in a couple of days. We skedaddled to wait it out in Warm Springs Bay (one of our favorite places in the world). Luckily we found a parking spot and docked safely behind some large fishing boats. The barometer dropped off the scale, winds rose, rain poured, and waves at the dock reached 3 feet. There was nothing to do but enjoy the good company of bears, hike to the waterfall and lake, and soak in the hot springs. Oh and grill up some black cod given to us by one of the fishing boats. Poor, poor us....

As the weather broke, the sun came out and the rest of the trip was filled with wildlife and fun. We encountered a couple of orca pods, and the journey through Wrangell Narrows began with a swimming moose just outside of Petersburg and a stop in quaint Meyers Chuck..

Ketchikan to Bellingham

We bid adieu to our dear friends in Ketchikan, but welcomed Dave and Cliff aboard for the two week voyage southward. First order of business was to get our clearance for crossing into Canada and get tested for COVID within 72 hours of entry. It take 2 days just to get to Prince Rupert, so this added a little complexity. But it all worked out, and considering the many other dangers of the trip, (including slippery docks) we passed with flying colors.

The beer in Canada still has a little catching up to do, but quaffing one in Bishop Bay Hot Springs sure lent some flavor. Adding an orca to the label is a low-down dirty trick, and gets us every time! And of course, Monique still can't resist a sketchy rope swing, no matter where she finds one.

A very large octopus found our shrimp pot, but was luckily more interested in the fish in the pot and left us a couple of tasty prawn dinners.

Our great crew got us safely into Bellingham after two weeks and 600 miles of rain and headwinds (and a few great sailing days) - and still looked pretty good if we say so ourselves.

We'll be here for the winter working on some boat projects and enjoying being on the road system. Drop us a line if you're in the neighborhood!

Photo highlights from the summer

Lots of really incredible wildlife encounters including wolves in Glacier Bay, baby oystercatchers, dancing bears, and feeding whales. Our "best of" album is up on Google Photos

Last month we submitted a bunch of photos taken of whale tails and orca fins to Happy Whale, and we are always thrilled to get them identified. One whale in Chatham Strait had not been encountered before and as of now, it is new to science! We would love to "name" this whale and help protect these majestic creatures. To do so, it takes a donation to whale conservation. We've had a few folks say "yes!" - so let us know if you would like to help. We will pool our resources and do some good.
Happy Halloween from the pirate crew of Sailboat BOB.
