Invitation to all Mount Gambier Business Owners and Operators


Please join Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast (RDALC) for an information session highlighting upcoming and current programs, services and funding being offered to businesses in the Mount Gambier area.

Representatives from Federal, State and Local Government and community agencies will discuss how they can support you to make your business a success.

We will be joined by guests from the Adelaide Business Hub (the SA provider for the Australian Small Business Advisory Service) who provide one-on-one small business mentoring support to work through specific digital and business management issues.

Presenters will discuss how they can assist you with workforce issues, small business support, business innovation and grants funding, financial and business planning services, trade and export opportunities, plus more.

Generations in Jazz

Strategic Plan Launch


We were excited to join Premier Steven Marshall at the launch of the Generations in Jazz Strategic Plan and Benefactor Opportunities on Saturday 23 October.
 
Generations in Jazz is the largest school-based music event in the Southern Hemisphere. After a two year hiatus (due to COVID-19 restrictions), the event will be going ahead on the weekend of 6 – 8 May 2022.

Tourism Vouchers for the Limestone Coast

South Australians can save on summer holidays in the Limestone Coast as part of a new tourism stimulus package to support the region impacted by additional COVID-19 restrictions earlier this month.

Discounts of $100 will be available when booking with partnering local travel agents, Phil Hoffmann Travel and Holidays of Australia.

It will support operators from Coonawarra to Naracoorte, to the coastal towns of Kingston and Robe, and those nearer the border in Mount Gambier – boosting bookings for tours, experiences and accommodation.

The $100 off holidays in the Limestone Coast will go on sale in November, for immediate travel until 31 January 2022. Find out more here

Cross Border Travel

The Cross Border Travel Associated Direction was updated at 5:00 pm 25 October 2021. Changes include: The New South Wales Cross Border Corridor now includes the township of Silverton.

The Cross Border Corridor is 70km either side of the South Australia / Victorian Border (excluding Portland, Victoria). For all relevant details regarding cross border travel, visit the SAPOL website here. We recommend keeping an eye on the SA Government website for current interstate travel restrictions and how these directions are applied. South Australia’s COVID-Ready Plan

From 23 November 2021, South Australia’s borders will be open to fully vaccinated people from all Australian states and territories (quarantine will apply to LGAs with community transmission and less than 80% of the population fully vaccinated). If you plan to travel to South Australia from this date, please submit your application after midnight on 23 November 2021. Any application submitted prior to this time will be assessed against travel restrictions currently in place. Find out more here


Essential Travellers - Vaccinations

All Commercial Transport and Freight Workers arriving by road from the ACT, NSW and Victoria must produce evidence of having received at least 1 dose of a TGA-approved COVID-19 vaccine in order to be permitted to enter South Australia. Further information regarding vaccination requirements for Essential Travellers can be found here
 

Public Activities

South Australia is currently under Level 1 restrictions with some additional restrictions. For the full details, visit the SA Government COVID-19 website.

COVID-Ready Plan Released


The South Australian Government announced the COVID-Ready Plan this week which outlines the safe easing of restrictions and how COVID-19 will be managed in South Australia.

This includes the lifting of jurisdictional borders in the first instance and subsequent restrictions on activities across the coming months, along with ensuring a strong health response to manage COVID-19 cases.

Richard Stanton Memorial Award Winner


Mount Gambier-based ForestrySA ranger Kieran Gosden has won the 2021 Richard Stanton Memorial Award for her work in sustainable forestry and communities. 

Keiran's contributions to sustainable forest management and chain of custody systems were recognised at a presentation during the Responsible Wood AGM last week.

“Kieran’s involvement with the red-tailed black cockatoo, in establishing biodiversity corridors and linking isolated native forest with strips of revegetation and in the success of the award-winning Ghost Mushroom Lane and the ‘Dry Cave experience’ received high acclaim from the judging panel,” said Responsible Wood CEO, Simon Dorries.

Sponsorship Grants for Student Science Engagement and International Competitions


The Sponsorship Grants for Student Science Engagement and International Competitions provides funds to sponsor young Australians to take part in STEM activities.
 
Grants of between $1,500 to $15,000 to sponsor eligible Australian students to participate in: 
  • In-person and virtual STEM engagement events, activities and competitions hosted in Australia and New Zealand (where permitted by COVID-19 restrictions)
  • Virtual STEM engagement events, activities and competitions hosted overseas (students to participate remotely from Australia).
The grant amount will be up to 100% of eligible project costs. Eligible groups include schools, incorporated not for profit organisations, and entities incorporated in Australia applying on behalf of a student or a group of students. Applications close 25 January 2022. Find out more here

Run with the Megafauna in Naracoorte this November


The Heritage Trail Run at the World Heritage Naracoorte Caves National Park returns for 2021 as part of MegaFest, providing a timely boost for tourism in the Limestone Coast.

To be held on 14 November, the event caters for everyone, with participants choosing from the 23km Mega Fauna Run, 15km Stoney Point Run, 5km Dippy Run and the 1km Fossil Dash.

The Social Oak

 The Social Oak is Mount Gambier’s newest venue for tapas, sandwiches, local wines and beers, coffee and a select menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner items.

Open 7 days a week, The Social Oak is located at 67 Commercial Street West. 

Nature‐Based Tourism Small Grants Program


$550,000 in funding is available to support tourism experiences in South Australia’s nature and heritage places.

Grants from $2000 - $15,000 are available for small-scale and innovative projects to support nature-based tourism activation in South Australia’s national parks, gardens, reserves, reservoirs and Crown Land. This could include creating new or enhancing existing tourism experiences including seasonal or pop-up experiences, as well as tourism/regional events in parks and public places.
 
This Small Grants program will provide funding to get ideas off the ground, without the need to provide matching cash funds.

Heritage Tourism Grants Program


Grants of up to $50,000, provided on a matched funding basis, will support projects that enable the activation and use of State or Local heritage-listed places or State Heritage Areas for tourism purposes.
 
Projects do not have to be directly connected to the physical conservation of heritage fabric or values. The program is a key initiative of Growing Our Heritage Future, the State Government’s 10-year strategy for heritage tourism.

The $3 million Live Music Support Program offers funding through two categories for dedicated live music venues, music specific event promoters and professional touring artists and crew, to support them to resume live music activity once national and international borders re-open.

This will help to ensure the live music industry will be ready to host live music again post-pandemic.

Australia Day 2022 Community Grants


National Australia Day Council’s (NADC) Australia Day 2022 Community Events Grants program are now open, and to encourage you to apply for up to $30,000 to deliver an event that gives your community the opportunity to reflect, respect and celebrate on Australia Day.

Australia Day event hosts can apply for up to $20,000 to deliver events that use the National Australia Day Council’s branding ‘Reflect. Respect. Celebrate. We’re all part of the story.’ Applicants that collaborate with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to incorporate activities that reflect and respect the history of local indigenous people and celebrate their culture will be eligible to apply for an additional $10,000.

Farm Hand

Mount Schanck Station (SA)

Mount Schanck farm forms part of the agricultural division of Thomas Foods International (TFI), one of Australia’s largest family-owned food businesses since 1988. Mount Schanck is a premier 2,000 cattle and 15,000 sheep grazing property with excellent facilities and infrastructure on the idyllic Limestone Coast in South Australia, a key operation for growing, supplying, and distributing premium meat to the world. 

About the role

TFI are currently seeking a Farm Hand to join their close-knit team in an exciting permanent, full-time opportunity only 15 minutes outside of Mount Gambier township. The position involves all aspects of a mixed grazing, large-scale farming business. 

Some duties of the role will include:

  • General farm labour
  • High stocking rate, rotational grazing high input, high output farm system
  • 16 centre pivots growing winter and summer crops
  • Majority of machinery and equipment onsite to perform most jobs unless contracted out

Skills and experience

  • Experience in general farming practices or exposure to the agricultural industry is preferred, but not essential.
