Leeds Autism AIM Monthly Update: November 2021

Hello and welcome to our latest monthly newsletter! In this update from Leeds Autism AIM, part of The Advonet Group, we have news on:

Online Groups timetable: November 2021
We're holding Peer Support Group sessions on the 2nd and 16th, both from 6pm-7pm. Our Women-Aligned Group is on the 9th from 5:30pm-6:30pm.
Our Gaming Group on Discord will meet on the 23rd at 5pm, while our Coproduction Group is on the 25th from 5:30pm-7pm.

Autistic Question Time: Two panellists confirmed for free online Q&A event
Two of the panel for our Autistic Question Time event have been confirmed. Luke Aylward, our Information Officer, will be joined by Eli Smith, a Project Worker on the Out Spoken LGBTQI+ project, run by our friends at CHANGE and Yorkshire MESMAC. Two more panellists will be confirmed in due course.
The event takes place on Tuesday 30th November from 2pm-3pm and will be on Zoom. It is part of the Leeds For All series of events marking International Day of Disabled People and Disability History Month.

Introducing YAAMHEP: The new autism and mental health equity project
The new Comic Relief-funded project around autism and mental health has a name! It is called Yorkshire Autism AIM: Mental Health Equity Project, or YAAMHEP for short. 
The project aims to improve how mental health services across West Yorkshire work with autistic adults accessing support from them.
As part of YAAMHEP's work, they are recruiting a Peer Development Worker to help build autistic-led peer services across the county. It' offers 15 hours per week on a fixed-term contract; the deadline to apply is Monday 29th November at 12 Noon. For info about YAAMHEP and the job vacancy, please click on the links below.

Gaming Group's Discord Server
As well as having an official session on the fourth Tuesday of each month, our autistic-led Gaming Group runs informal sessions most Thursday evenings. These are from 6pm and take place on our Discord Server.
They are led by members of our Discord and are free to attend. If you would like to join, please email us at leedsautismaim@advonet.org.uk and we will send you an invite.
Final Autism Reference Group meeting of 2021 later this month
The final Autism Reference Group meeting for Leeds this year is on Tuesday 30th November. It is from 4pm to 5:30pm and is the forum for autistic adults to feed into the Adult Autism Partnership Board. The meeting will be online, but if this changes, we will let you know.

News in brief
Advocacy Awareness: IMHA explained
As part of Advocacy Awareness Week 2021 (From 1st-7th November), The Advonet Group have produced a video to explain how their Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) service works.
IMHA is for people who is sectioned under the Mental Health Act. In the video, IMHA Manager Paul Holland talks about who the service is for, what issues they work with and how they can help you. Please click on the button below to watch the video.

FlexiBus: New flexible service for East Leeds
A new bookable bus service has launched for East Leeds. FlexiBus allows people to travel within East Leeds to local places in their area like shops, workplaces and GP surgeries.
To use it, you must book at least one hour before you wish to travel. Then, the bus will pick you up at a safe and convenient place within 200m (3 minutes walk) of your location.

Places free for self-advocacy group sessions
The Advonet Group, the charity that Leeds Autism AIM is part of, have some free spaces available for their upcoming self-advocacy group sessions.
The first set of groups will start on Tuesday 30th November from 4pm-5:30pm.
They are online and free to attend. At the groups, they will talk about different ways in which you can speak up for yourself and your rights.
