Idaho Out-of-School Network would like to recognize our 2021 Lights On Afterschool Champions starting with our statewide Champion, Sharon Cates, a science coordinator in State Department of Education's, Office of the Superintendent. Sharon has worked tirelessly to help afterschool educators to teach science by doing science and exploring phenomena.

WEBINAR: RACE, EQUITY, & INCLUSION SESSION #3

Join this candid discussion for out-of-school time programs. These workshops center around Anti-racist and Anti-bias examples in school settings. Presenters provide understanding into the fundamental premise of creating an Antiracist learning environment. True stories and research in schools will illustrate the need to foster an inclusive learning space for all youth.

TMC Announcements: NOW STEAMING 

ION is proud to welcome, Crystal Scott Ivey to the TMC Team to support afterschool educators in STEAM education. Crystal is an experienced research scientist and educator serving through AmeriCorps. She is coordinating educator training online and in-person trainings. The Think, Make, Create program now has 16 labs across Idaho. Please contact Crystal to request information on using Idaho's mobile makerspace labs in your afterschool program.

Funding for Youth Gardens

The Univerisy of Idaho Extension 4-H Youth Program has funds available for all child care, afterschool and out-of-school sites in Blaine, Camas, Gooding, Jerone, Lincoln, Minidoka, Oneida, Power or Twin Falls Counties. Receive up to $2,000 for garden equipment and more.

Innovation Funding for Youth Employees

The Department of Labor has funding to help youth (ages 16 - 24) "shadowing" employers as they develop job-specific skills such as arriving on time, communication, independence and self-confidence.  The Department of Labor pays the employee up to $11.00 hourly. For more information contact:

JUNIOR ROBOTICS CHALLENGE


K-12 US students: Your challenge is to design a robot that can dig and move lunar soil (regolith) from one area of the lunar South Pole to a holding container near a future Artemis Moon base. As NASA prepares to return to the Moon, lunar regolith will be needed for multiple purposes, like building a moon base using lunar concrete; harvesting water that can also be used for rocket fuel; and extracting possible metals or minerals. NASA will need robots that can help! Please create at least one drawing of your robot’s design (e.g., original work of art, 3D model, diagram, or photo of a prototype, etc.) and a written summary that explains your robot’s design in 150 words or less. Your robot must be no larger than 3.5 feet x 2 feet x 2 feet in size and should address three main design considerations:

IDAHO SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIRS


Grants are available for teachers to support students projects for grades 9 - 12. The Idaho STEM Action Center and its partners host 3 regional fairs for students to present their findings at EISEF (Eastern Idaho Science & Engineering Fair) in partnership with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) held at Idaho State University, WISEF (Western Idaho Science & Engineering Fair) in partnership with Micron held at Boise State University, or NISEF (Northern Idaho Science & Engineering Fair) held at Coeur d’Alene Resort.

During the event, students have the opportunity to share their ideas with one another, engage with STEM professionals and compete for over 50 medals/certificates including the Bearden Award a $500 cash prize for females in computer science, and also the chance to attend and compete at the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair in May (all-expense paid).

LIGHT AND SHADOW 


Leap into Science Training: Tuesday, November 9th: 9-11 a.m. PST

This program is open to libraries, museums, AND out-of-school time programs hosted by the Imagine Children’s Museum and School’s Out and is open to anyone in Washington, Idaho, and Hawaii!  Leap into Science is a nationwide program developed by the Franklin Institute Science Museum which integrates open-ended science activities with children’s books, designed for children ages 3-10 and their families.
