Creating Compassionate Cultures Together
October 29, 2021

First, From the Heart

The rugged individualist is a popular leadership archetype that permeates much of our collective mindset. Perhaps a style once suited for times past, these lone wolves rise to the metaphorical top of the mountain or organizational ladder.

In fact, research tells us that just the opposite is true. Most of us don’t need a study to verify our own experience – collaboration in open, trusting, and safe spaces (virtual or in-person) is a powerful path to creating compassionate cultures where each person and the whole organization thrives.

Working together to create compassionate culture works. We’re so inspired returning home after convening our first post-lockdown, in-person organizational retreat. The willingness of all the participants to share and explore openly during the two and ½ days of collaborative group discussion, small breakouts, exercises, case studies, and contemplative practices was generative. At the closing segment, the leadership participants and our faculty all acknowledged the emergence of new levels of potential, trust, and safety among this remarkable high functioning team.

May we all grow by courageously diving into the unknown of the co-creative process with intention, compassion, and wholeheartedness.

There is no more urgent collaborative project than that of humanity working to save our planet. We send our well wishes to all the leaders and participants at COP26 who are “committed to making progress in a transparent and inclusive way.” We are delighted to share a complimentary ticket to Realising a Compassionate Planet during COP26. #TogetherForOurPlanet #ClimateAction

Creating Together

No one is an island. In our competitive world, the temptation is to limit our dependence on others. Organizational and team success requires cooperation and collaboration, and compassionate leaders need to create safe environments that support sharing and co-creation. Recognizing that each person brings unique perspective and gifts to building solutions is at the heart of compassionate culture. Read more.

Getting Serious About Diversity: Enough Already with the Business Case
by Robin J. Ely and David A. Thomas
in Harvard Business Review, Nov-Dec 2020

Diversity is no guarantee of improved returns. In fact, diversity initiatives implemented superficially can harm results. To fully benefit from increased racial and gender diversity, organizations must be willing to change the corporate culture and power structure. Read the research.

Practice Matters

1 + 1 + 1 = ?

We marvel at the magic of creativity within ourselves. Do we know where it comes from? What emerges in any given moment in time? How are we influenced by our past experiences or the feelings and emotions moving through us right now?

Sometimes we can identify that which sparked us to create. Maybe it was a confluence of inspirations that prompted us to jump bravely off the cliff into the great unknown. Each creative act has its unique origins and journey. Each a cause for celebration.

Imagine the inklings of two or more people connecting to create in harmony, aligned in shared intention and purpose. Such collaborative explorations might be an even more complex and mysterious unfolding of creative energy. When we gather to weave and bob through an organic sense of play – allowing, honoring, and growing together – we courageously surrender our ego to the energetic flow. Does it really matter what emerges? Perhaps. Or that we find joy in sharing our heart, soul, vulnerability, and brilliance to experience the gift of the alchemical dance.

When can we practice? Always!
