Haunt Fire

A fire broke out the early morning of Monday, October 25th at Fright Acres Haunted House in Parker, Colorado. The catacomb section of the haunt was engulfed in flames, taking 70 firefighter personnel over 6 hours to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported and the other three sections of the haunt remained unharmed. Fire Investigators obtained surveillance video that shows two people arriving at the property and walking inside shortly before the flames were visible. Investigators are working to identify the individuals and encourage anyone with information related to them, or how the fire started to come forward.  Fright Acres Haunted House was able to finish their season October 29th - 31st with a rerouted trail.

Top Haunts List

Coaster Nation has released the 2021 edition of their Top 31 Haunts List. Billed as "100% true and fair fan voting", more than 150 professional haunts around the U.S. and Canada were nominated by fans. To be eligible for participation, all haunts were required to be professional haunts that ran throughout the 2021 Halloween season. Throughout October fans visited the haunts and then voted for their favorites. Topping the list was Niles Screampark (Niles, MI) followed by HellsGate Haunted House (Lockport, IL), HUSH Haunted Attraction (Westland, MI), Dent SchoolHouse (Cincinnati, OH), and Everhaunt Haunted House (Angola, NY). Congratulations to all the featured attractions.

2021 Haunt Industry Report

HauntPay has released their 2021 Haunt Industry Report. In early August HauntPay had a three-minute survey for members of the haunt community. Participants' data has been compiled and analyzed to give an overview of the state of the haunt industry for 2021. The report covers trends on staffing, ticketing, and COVID's impact on the haunt industry. Respondents indicated that staffing was their main concern for this year with over 30% of respondents indicating that they employ between 51-100 employees during peak season and 9% employing over 101 staff members. Contactless payment options are increasing in popularity with 43% of haunts accepting this form of payment and the percentage of online ticket sales are encompassing significant portions of the overall sales. 8.6% of the participating haunts indicated that they did not plan to accept any on-site ticketing for 2021. For marketing, Facebook is still the most popular social media network with 96% of businesses using the platform. Instagram was the second most popular platform and video-based sites like Youtube, Snapchat, and Tik Tok were gaining steam for the 2021 season. Haunters can download the full report at HauntPay's website

Haunt For Sale

HorrorWorld's official haunt "Into the Black" is up for sale. The sale comes after fire permit issues caused the haunt to prematurely close and cancel its last four nights at the end of the 2021 season. The haunt is being sold as an entire package and must be removed from its current location by the end of 2021. Interested parties may e-mail Larry Bones at Larry@boneyardfx.com for more information (serious inquiries only).

A wide variety of makeup, fixtures, and more will be available for purchase. Pictures of the available items will be posted to the company's official Facebook page, but all sales must be in cash, in-person at the event - no items will be shipped.

These immersive shopping experiences will feature realistic set recreations of iconic locations from the show, photo ops, interactive activities, and a wide array of exclusive Stranger Things merchandise sure to please any fan of the series. “We are always looking for new and innovative ways to let Stranger Things fans see themselves more in the show they love,” says Greg Lombardo, Head of Experiences at Netflix. “This first-ever Stranger Things store sends them right into the heart of Hawkins, in a truly immersive retail experience, totally stoked with 80’s vibes and the chance to take home a piece of their favorite show with unique merchandise that isn’t available anywhere else. But be warned, you never know when things will turn Upside Down.” It is free to visit these pop-up shops, but capacity is limited. Reservations for priority skip-the-line access can be made online.  For walk-ins there will be a virtual queue accessible via QR code at the store, even if pre-booking sessions are sold out. This virtual queue will be available only if the reservations queue is not full for the day so advanced reservations are highly recommended.

Looking for haunts and Halloween happenings in Arizona? The group behind AZ Haunters, Arizona's Halloween Haunting Community, have launched a new website that lists member haunts/displays: AZHauntMap.com. Virtual Haunts

The real estate website Zillow has created its first ever interactive virtual haunted house, 667 Dead End Drive. Brave souls can click through the Zillow listing and enter a 3D home virtual tour to search for clues about the demise of the mansion's former owner, Edith Thistle, who still haunts the house today. The experience begins at a Zillow Listing for the manor with home details - like any other house listed on the site - but when users click on the virtual tour, paranormal forces quickly take over for a exciting journey through creepy kitchens, haunted hallways, and spooky stairways. Described as "an American Gothic Mansion with great bones (although some are rotting)", the estate used in this production has a real-life haunted history and has been featured in popular horror films and TV shows. This supernatural experience was produced by Zillow and Media.Monks.

Repurposing Your Halloween Leftovers

Looking to get rid of your leftover Halloween pumpkins? Instead of tossing them in the garbage, they can be used as feed for animalsLucky Ones Farm Sanctuary in Calgary, Alberta uses donated pumpkins to feed their rescued goats, donkeys, pigs, and cows. “Animals really love pumpkins,” said Lucky Farms Sanctuary co-owner Kennadi Herbert. “They’re a very good healthy snack for them." Look for local animal rescues and farms near you to see if they would like a tasty Halloween treat for their animals.

A Seattle-based non-profit, Birthday Dreams, will turn your Halloween candy into treats for homeless children. Birthday Dreams works with over eight shelters in the Seattle area to celebrate children who otherwise would not have the means to have a birthday party celebration. They create "birthdays-in-a-box" with everything from party hats to balloons to goodie bags for the birthday child's friends. The non-profit is seeking donations of Halloween candy to include in the goodie bags. Candy donations can be dropped off at the Birthday Dreams offices in Renton and financial donations can be accepted through their website. So far, the organization has celebrated more than 10,000 local children and the team hopes Halloween candy donations will make this year even sweeter.

Jump Scares

Why do we keep falling for jump scares? Author Ellen Airhart delves into the science behind our startle reactions in an article in Popular Science. Experts agree that jarring, sensory experiences (such as sudden loud noises, sudden movements, or bursts of light) are universally terrifying, but haunters can use more subtle techniques to prime guests for jump scares. Visual cues before the scare - such as fanged animals or mutilated bodies - make individuals react more strongly when startled. Aural cues can help set the mood as well with prolonged noise or sudden roars. Another technique, suggested by Leonard Pickel of Hauntrepreneurs, is sneaky tactile experiences such as making floors sink and move back and forth a little to keep individuals nervous without terrifying them.

Halloween History

Trick-or-Treating for your favorite candy has become a staple of Halloween celebrations around the nation, but it is actually a relatively new addition to Halloween celebrations. In an article from CNN, reporters Noah Sheidlower and Radhika Marya discuss the history of Halloween food traditions from soul cakes to apples & nuts to the candy we know and love today.

General Mills' Halloween breakfast cereals, Count Chocula and Franken Berry, celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. In an article for Mel Magazine, reporter Brian VanHooker interviewed super fans and creatives who worked on the brand to get a behind the scenes story about the cereals' evolution over the past five decades. The article features Laura Levin (author and creator of Count Chocula and Franken Berry), Larry Kenney (voice actor of Count Chocula since 1978), Robb Pruitt (voice actor of Franken Berry since 2009), Chris Phillips (voice of Boo Berry since 2009), creative directors from General Mills, and more - all discussing their memories of working on the iconic cereals.
