Dear Market Friends,
Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate our 23rd year at our annual Harvest Festival last Sunday! It was a fun and festive day and we are so appreciative of the support from our hardworking farmers and vendors, and loyal customers. Here’s to the next 23!

This Sunday is Halloween and we will have loads of treats for you! Wear your costumes (dogs too!) and join us for trick or treating, a doggy costume party at the Dog Zenergy tent with treats courtesy of Gia’s Grub and True Pet Kitchens. Many of our vendors will have little trick or treat surprises, along with their amazing farm fresh produce, delicious foods and gorgeous artisan items.

Fast Heart Mart will be near the red playground with live music - we are so excited to welcome one of our favorite musicians back! The kids can also enjoy a fun Halloween craft.
See you Sunday!
Shop safely. Support local.

VENDORS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
GILBERT & LEE FARMS

Originally purchased in 1986, the San Marcos farm had 67 avocado trees, to which the family added macadamia trees and then fuyu persimmons, blood and navel oranges, cherimoya, meiwa kumquat, loquat, blackberries, raspberries, figs, sapote, apples, plums, grapefruit, strawberry guava, satsuma tangerines, mulberry, lemons and limes. When the trees began to bear fruit, they began selling at the Solana Beach Farmer’s market. In 2002, they purchased an 8 acre farm in Fallbrook where they now grow cut flowers, vegetables, fruits, avocados, berries, nuts and dragon fruit.

“We enjoy our orchards and use a lot of compost to feed the farm. Whatever organic matters that we can get our hands on is put back to the trees for weed control and water retention. We believe in natural fertilization.”

Visit the friendly and helpful team at Gilbert & Lee Farms each Sunday along the east facing gate at the market. You’ll love their incredible selection and quality!

MA & JAY ARTISAN BUTTERS

“Everything’s better with butter!”

We are so in love with the amazing artisan dairy free butters and grass fed compound butters from Ma & Jay. Have you tried them yet?

Ma (Deb) and her son Jay love to cook, and when Covid happened, they cooked a whole lot. When adding plain butter to their meals got boring, Ma and Jay got creative. They explored a variety of flavors - Jay relishing in the savory flavors and Ma delighting in the sweet flavors. Their artisanal butters were born! Whether it’s a dairy free butter or a grass fed compound butter, these delicious and high quality butters in flavors like Gimme Gimme S’mores, Strawberry Fields Forever, and Herby the Love Bug are sure to delight every taste bud.

Did you know that dairy- free plant based butter (made from refined coconut oil which doesn’t have the coconut flavor) contains heart healthy fatty acids that boost heart health, helps burn fat, reduces hunger and can raise your good cholesterol? And they taste and melt just like “real” butter!

Their grass-fed compound butters are made with 85% butterfat which make them creamy and delicious and a healthier choice than regular butters. They are a good source of vitamin A, antioxidants, vitamin K and omega-3 fatty acids, and also have anti-inflammatory properties and other health benefits.

Ma & Jay will be offering a Holiday Bundle for Thanksgiving and the Winter Holidays, featuring 3 butters inside of one of their signature holiday boxes. Their butters make cooking for the holidays “so easy”. In the box, you will receive their Fully Loaded Fresh Herb Butter (perfect for roasting your turkey), their Brown Sugar-Cinnamon and Bourbon Butter (great for making your apple pie), and their Cranberry Orange-Ginger Butter (a delicious table butter for your fresh bread and rolls). They will be taking pre-orders starting this Sunday October 31st. In addition, they will also have their dairy-free Pumpkin Spice Butter and their grass-fed Pumpkin Sage Butter throughout the fall - this is a perfect add on to their Holiday Bundle!

You can find our friends from Ma & Jay on the west side of the covered lunch arbor each Sunday. Come find your favorites!
SAUBOON HANDCRAFTED SOAPS

If you’ve ever walked along our artisan section on the turf on upper Girard Avenue, you have no doubt been stopped by the incredible yet subtle fragrances coming from the booth of SAUBOON SOAPS. You’ll find pink Himalayan salt (our favorite!), rose clay + activated charcoal, coconut citrus, lemongrass + cedar wood, oatmeal milk + honey, bergamot black tea, and Moroccan mint - just to name a few!

Meet our friend Zulfar Shaker, the mother of four boys who is a full time accountant by trade.

SAUBOON (the word for soap in the native Afghan language Farsi) embodies all of the natural ingredients you deserve for your skin. Resulting from countless hours of testing, these small batch soaps include a variety of clays that are known for their detoxification properties that promote brightness in the skin. Foaming sugar scrubs, luxurious lip balms, beech wood soap dishes, exfoliating soap bags and sponges, bath bombs and holiday gift sets round out Zulfar’s incredible product line.

"I felt the satisfaction of pushing myself was always worth it. When SAUBOON was started during the middle of this pandemic, it brought on its challenges. However I continued to find ways to motivate myself and create products that served a need as well as showing my kids how easy putting your mind to something can produce successful results. Learning, perseverance, dedication and challenging myself are some of the headline habits helping with the growth of my business today.

Whenever we took family vacations I always would purchase soaps for myself and for gifting when we returned back home. A few years back, I started to wonder just how soaps were made. Everything onward after that built up to where I am today. I watched hours of YouTube videos with makers creating the most amazing cold process soaps and read books and researched. I eventually started testing and creating small batches and the addiction grew from there. I come from Afghanistan originally and for generations in that region clays were used for its beneficial properties to cleanse and purify skin and hair. I wanted to add this ingredient in my soaps and it certainly contributes to the experience in using my handcrafted soaps."

In addition to raising four incredible boys (lots of soccer!) and devoting time to her soap business, Zulfar has been busy serving the Afghan Refugee Relief work - gathering sponsorships and donations to newly arriving refugees. There are 1,300 expected in San Diego.

“We are all about the 'Smells So Good' experience, so give us a try!”
