this week’s podcast:

I couldn’t be more pleased to bring this week’s podcast episode to you. Lauren Daley, MD is a young palliative care doctor who has a great deal of insight into how we need to address end of life. Her passion was born of the personal pain she experienced when her mother died when she was very young. Carrying that with her throughout her life, she has a gift for being able to meet people where they are at in their process.

I highly encourage you to share this episode with anyone you have in your life that is in medicine, anyone who is experiencing a life limiting condition or loves someone who is, and honestly? Everyone. Because this is terrain we will all walk one day and Lauren’s conversation will increase your awareness and fluency and opens up a world of care available that you may not be aware of.

Lauren is a palliative care doctor, motherless daughter, longtime griever and believer that having a healthy relationship with our mortality is the secret to living a better life. Her podcast, "Talk Dying to Me" shares stories from the crossroads of life and death, and all of the messy bits in between. She hopes her work creates space for fellow mortals to contemplate the harder parts of being human and weigh in on life's greatest mystery. You can find her at www.talkdyingtome.com

Episode 106. Talk Dying To Me: Lauren Daley, MD

My daughter, who was dying of cancer was laying on my lap. I looked down at her, eyes closed, the most serene look on her face. She reached her small hand up and placed it on my cheek, “Will you love me forever mom?” “Yes forever sweetie.” “Even when I’m an angel?” Tears rolled down my face, “Yes, even when you’re an angel.” She died the next day. I never told her she was dying, she wasn’t quite five years old, I wasn’t sure she’d understand. I didn’t want to scare her. But I think in that moment she knew.

–Shannon, her mother

“Taya Joy was her name. She was six weeks from her fifth birthday. She died May 25, 2010 from leukemia after fighting it for more than half of her short life. She was an amazing little girl. She changed my life in so many ways, for the better. I’ve got a million tiny stories about her.”
