Preparing for Power Outages

and tips for sheltering in place

A blog post by Pam Wilson

In the twelfth installment of Pam Wilson’s Emergency Preparedness Series, she shares ideas to help you prepare for wildfires, power outages, and sheltering in place. For example, if you know a storm is coming, it is a good idea to set your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest settings so food remains colder longer. Once the internal temperature reaches 40 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 2 hours, refrigerator contents should be thrown away. Read the full post for more great tips!

2021 Highlights from the Willamette Mainstem Cooperative

Checking in with Michael Ahr

A blog post by Troy Abercrombie of Western Invasives Network

In April of 2021, Benton SWCD welcomed Michael Ahr as our Natural Resources Conservation Program Manager. Michael immediately hit the ground running as he and his team took on multiple inventories on the Willamette this summer, searching out Ludwigia and yellow floating heart and complementing the work of colleagues from Willamette Riverkeeper. Populations of wapato, a native aquatic plant, were making a strong rebound and Ludwigia was limited to a couple small sites that were easily hand-pulled. Read the full article to learn more about Michael's work with the WIllamette Mainstem Cooperative this summer.
