Success at Royal!
24 October 2021

Dear WKC,

Apologies to the delayed release of the latest edition of our newsletter. Despite the colder temperature and less time spent on the water, there is still lots going on at the club and nationally. As a reminder, winter circuits have restarted on Tuesday and Thursday Night at 6pm in the gym. Speak to Paul Dimmock for more information and to get involved. Likewise, paddle machines are moving out of storage for more regular use. A reminder to please look after them and wipe them down after use. This also applies to gym equipment. Please use the sprays and towels provided.

As we are spending more time training indoors, we would like to request that ALL members are regularly taking a lateral flow test to ensure the safety of all users of the Waterside Centre.

Our very own Hare & Hounds series will commence from the 31st October, keep a look out for messages from Jim, club Chairman to find out how you can Get Involved, whether it's baking cakes, marshalling or timing. There really is a job for everyone! It is also time to start registering for an entry so speak to your group lead or Jim for more information.

In the meantime we are in desperate need of Thursday & Saturday kitchen helpers - sign up on the sheet by the kitchen/ sign up on the duty roster on Team App (events) or email club chairman Jim, chairman@weykayak.co.uk, for Saturdays or comms@weykayak.co.uk for Thursdays. Both are a great opportunity to give back to the club without a long term commitment as well as getting to know more members.

Surrey Hills and Rivers will be running Paddlesport Camps over the autumn half term weeks, please feel free to pass on their details to friends and family who might be interested. As a result, the changing rooms will also be closed for a period of time at the beginning and end of the sessions, as per our changing room policy, so make sure you are aware of the timings shown below. On top of that, there will be extra paddling sessions for juniors being run in half term. View further details below in the events section.

Finally, a few of our members ventured to Royal Canoe Club last week for the Royal Paddling Challenge 2021 with a selection of good results and races for all. A full write-up with images below.

We look forward to hearing more about the intrepid explorers that made it up to Scotland last weekend for the Hooley 5k Championships.

As always continue to pass anything onto us, no matter how small, to comms@weykayak.co.uk as early as possible so it does not miss the newsletter going out.

Enjoy the water and daylight while it lasts!!

Royal Paddling Challenge 2021

It seemed like all weathers came in one day when a few of our junior and senior paddlers took to the water last Sunday to take on the Royal Paddling Challenge 2021. All up for grabs was the 10k national champion title for the Senior men, women and U18 men and women.
Chris Carson took his new boat for it's first flatwater competition and took it to a fine 2nd place in 44 minutes, with only 6 seconds off the national champion title. Honorary member Rachel Jeffries, who had been training with us recently, came up with the national champion title in the senior women's in a time of 58 minutes.

In the Junior field, we almost had a paddle in every race. David Hayman-Joyce took his new boat and his hard work recently paid off with a brilliant fourth place in the U18 men's field. Honor Lewis claimed a brilliant 1st place in the U18 women's field with nearly 3 minute lead. An excellent result to finish a brilliant season.
In the U16 men's field, we had four boats representing us. Arthur Morley battled it out in the front group from the beginning to come home in 2nd place. Patrick Allan followed shortly behind in fourth, 30 seconds off a podium position. Felix Shetty and Ed Saunders had a head to head battle to the finish line with Felix coming out the winner and finishing in 11th and Ed in 12th. Both great positions in a field mostly older than them.
In the U16 women's field, Nerys Hall showed a dominant performance, flying off the start line and finishing in 1st with a strong sprint finish.
In the U14 boy's field, Will Roeser, Ben Flint and Lucas Clifford finished 5th, 6th and 8th respectively. Ocean O'Keefe finished in 3rd in the lightning boys field and Jocelyn Allan came 3rd as well in the lightning girls field.
All these performances showed how much hard training all these athletes have put into their summer and we look forward to seeing them continue to enjoy the sport enough to keep competing at this level. Well done all!

More photos are now in the gallery section in TeamApp.

Dates for 2022 Sprint Regatta's

Dates for your diary!!

The Regatta dates for the 2022 season are now finalised
9-10 April
4-5 June
2-3 July
3-4 September

We do not have confirmation on which events are key selections, nationals or Macgregor club paddle yet but often the nationals and Macgregor are the last two regattas of the year.

It would be great to get as many people as possible to these regattas this year as it is a great all club event. If you have any questions about regattas or what is required, speak to your group lead.

Get Involved!

Club night, or Saturday bacon butties would not be possible without our amazing volunteers.  We desperately need volunteers for Saturday kitchen, if you could help out, get in contact with chairman@weykayak.co.uk
It is a great way to contribute back to the club, whilst getting to know more members (in a dry and warm setting!)

Massive shout out to some of volunteers from this week as well as those who regularly get involved by completing the washing up at the end of club night.

You can volunteer to help with Thursday club night via Teamapp. Go to the event's section, find a Thursday Club Night event and click on the duty roster to see if the roles have been filled yet. Even if you can only do one club night a year, it still helps!

2021  - WINTER
SWIM PROGRAMME

The Programme is broken into three different programmes,
  1. HARD - -
  2. MEDIUM –
  3. EASY -
  • The HARD programme is designed for a 50m pool as the Surry Sports ParkThe MEDIUM and EASY programme is designed for use in the Spectrum Pool with its 25 m pool.
  • Obviously – this is a guideline only, and there will be cross overs till you find a group / program that you can work within
  • The program is designed to add approximately 50 m per session, stretching you gradually and building endurance, so stick to the program
  • A pullbuoy, goggles and water bottle are necessary for each session
  • Without using the pullbuoy, the session will feel overwhelming – the pullbouy is designed to get your body into the correct position in the water and enable you to work your arms. The kicking is separate enabling you to concentrate on kicking as it is often left overlooked !
  • There are THREE very different speeds to training and you NEED to work on them
  1. WARM UP & COOL DOWN – is done very slowly, elongating stroke, focusing on getting body into correct alignment, stretch out each stroke.
  2. PACE – is a constant speed, 70 % of what you can do, kicking constantly at 4 kicks per stoke, breathing every 4th stroke.
  3. SPRINT- is at 100% of your ability – arm pace doesn’t change- BUT pull under the water changes and kicking goes to 6 kicks per stroke.
  • For the Kicking in the program, just use the pullbouy and hold it with two arms out in front.
A kickboard is not necessary.
  • If there is anything you don’t understand or need help with please ask your Group Lead.
  • The aim is enjoyment, no injuries, endurance, fitness .

FUTURE UPDATES WILL BE ON TEAM APP (DOCUMENTS)

GWC 400 Draw

The October draw for the GWC 400 Club was made on 17 October by Jocelyn Mee, the grand daughter of the Administrators. The winning No., for the £50 this month, was 34.

It is great to see so much of the Centre back into full use. All will enjoy the improvements made over the last 18 months, but there is still a lot of catching up to be done with general repairs in a building nearly 20 years old.  Again the GWC Trustees wish to thanks all those who have played a part in the upgrades, in processing grants and helping with installation.  A great effort by many people. THANKS.

The 400 Club is an important part of the Centre's fund raising and will continue to supply cash for on going improvements and Centre upkeep. We would ask all members and friends to consider joining.  It only costs £2.00 per month and at least 50% is paid out in prizes.

To join, go to the Wey KC website http://www.weykayak.co.uk. or contact the Chairman at chairman@weykayak.co.uk

Thanks
The GWC Trustees
