Reflections on Rome
Michael C. McFarland, SJ

We have just returned from our Colloquium in Rome and are still savoring the many rich experiences we had during that packed week. The Colloquium is always one of our most important initiatives, because it gives the participants an immediate and personal experience of the institutions we support, particularly their faculty, students and programs, leading to a depth of knowledge and insight that is not available any other way.  I have shared a fuller account of the experience elsewhere; here I will just highlight a couple of key observations.

- In Memoriam -

Fr Jacquineau Azétsop SJ
Dean and Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences
Pontifical Gregorian University

"We have all witnessed the generosity with which Fr Azétsop led the Faculty of Social Sciences, without measuring energy or time in this mission that he lived with deep commitment and a great sense of responsibility," wrote the Rector in his Letter to the University Community. "At this sad time, my heartfelt condolences go out to the professors, lecturers and students of the Faculty of Social Sciences and to his family, as well as to all those who knew him and have a living memory of him. We entrust Fr Azétsop to the Lord, as an expression of our gratitude for his creative service to the Church and for his teaching in our University and in various institutions around the world".

"Known by colleagues and students for his kindness, calmness and helpfulness, Fr Kujur was an example for the way he faced the disease, always with great trust in his caregivers. The Catholic Church’s foremost research institute studying sexual abuse of minors is expanding its mandate to also include the sexual and spiritual abuse of adults, evidence of the Vatican's increasing awareness that children aren’t the only victims of clergy who abuse their power and authority.

Hans ZollnerSJ, one of Pope Francis’ top advisers on abuse, said the institute’s broader scope reflects lessons from the #MeToo movement, the pope's own recognition that nuns and seminarians can be abused by their superiors, and evidence that systemic and structural problems in the church have allowed abuse to fester.

Lay Women Study at Pontifical Universities

Dr. Lynda Robitaille, presently serving as dean of theology at St. Mark’s College, Vancouver, talks to us about how her "studies opened doors to different roles," how "serving the Church means working within the Church to help it grow," and about the need for lay people "to be integrated into decision-making in the Church at all levels."

Pope Francis' Universal prayer intention for October is:

Intention for evangelization - Missionary disciples
