Fieldwork update

We have recently launched fieldwork in three countries: Uruguay (mixed mode design, CAPI and CAWI), Finland (CAWI only) and Estonia (CAWI only). France is finishing with preparations of its pilot and will begin fieldwork very soon. The GGS is also still in the field in the Czech Republic.

GGS in Norway: Now available!

We are pleased to announce that the data from the 2020 Norwegian GGS (Round 2, Wave 1) is now available to download!

The GGS Norway was the first GGS that was conducted completely online. One reason to collect the GGS in Norway was to better understand the dramatic drop in fertility levels since 2010 that cannot be explained by conventional structural factors. Although register data is available in Norway, the GGS made it possible to collect more in-depth data on families and fertility.

The target population consisted of people aged 18-54 who were resident in Norway on November 1st 2020. In total, a gross-sample of 15,000 received invitations to the survey. Over the course of the fieldwork period (November-December, 2020), about 30% of this gross-sample completed interviews (yielding a final sample of N = 5031 respondents).

If you want to learn more about the Norwegian GGS data, you can read the technical report written by Lars Dommermuth and Trude Lappegård. In addition, you can  watch the GGP-connect webinar given by Lars Dommermuth, last May. The recordings of this webinar can be found here

Access the data via our website ggp-i.org under "Login to GGP User Space.”

GGS pilot in Estonia: Now available!

In the 6th GGP-connect webinar, which was held on October 26, Tiina Tambaum and Martin Klesment talked about organization the GGS pilot survey in Estonia and provided insights on the incentive scheme that was used in the pilot and the respective plans for the upcoming full survey. The Estonian GGS pilot can now be downloaded on the GGP user portal!

The web-based pilot survey was carried out from April to June 2021 and followed an individual sampling frame representative of the 18-59 year old inhabitants of Estonia on January 1st. The pilot included an experiment with three incentive groups. Group 1 was offered an option of a free two-month access to a package of online media. Group 2 was given an option to participate in a lottery of gift cards. Group 3 was given a no-cost option to be part of a donation to two NGOs dealing with mental health issues and to participate in a lottery of gift cards. The response rate was 18.1%, resulting in a final sample of N = 2,206. The full GGS study in Estonia is currently in the field.

If you want to learn more about the Estonian GGS pilot, you can watch the GGP-connect webinar given by prof. Tiina Tambaum and Martin Klesment, last week. The recordings of this webinar can be found here

Exciting news on funding

Austria joins the GGP!

  • Austria has participated in the first generation of the GGP programme since 2008. The second and – yet – latest wave was conducted in 2012/13. Since then, apart from a minor additional module of the Austrian Micro-census that is surveyed in 5 years intervals, no integrative survey on demographic behavior has been fielded.  Now, things have changed: Austria has recently finalized its funding acquisition for the recent GGP. In addition, Austria will finalize most elements of the preparatory phase by the end of 2021. Subsequently, Austria will enter the field in 2022.    Austria is ready to go!
Funding for our Finnish colleagues!
  • The Strategic Research Council (SRC) of the Academy of Finland has granted funding for the NetResilience project until the end of 2024. NetResilience investigates demographic change from the perspective of social networks. Their practical goal is to support targeted, cost-effective regional solutions to family, youth and ageing services in regions facing either depopulation or population growth. In one of their four  thematic work packages, the focus is on results from the Generations and Gender Survey (GGS).

Upcoming Events

  • European Population Conference (EPC), from 29 June to 2 July 2022, online and onsite, in Groningen, the Netherlands. Deadline for abstract submission: November 1, 2021.
  • ECSR Annual Conference (ECSR), from 6 to 8 July 2022, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Deadline abstract submission: December 17, 2021.
