Hello dear friends!

Does everyone else feel like this fall is simply flying by us? We're not sure where October went, but we do know that the beginning of this new Season has been full of generative processes and embodied conversations which are foundational to the exciting programming that's coming up. We've got some stuff to put on your calendar, so keep reading - we are very much looking forward to sharing with you!

With hugs and love,

Virtual "Dancing With" Movement series, hosted by ADF Studios :: First class on November 4th!
Free and open to anyone interested in awakening awareness in their body

This free workshop series will use mindful movement, dance, and imagery to provide people living with Parkinson's disease the tools to achieve increased quality of life, a reduction in the risk of falls, and a sense of personal agency. These techniques are also a meaningful practice for anyone who wants to work towards a deeper awareness in their own body. Whether living with Parkinson's or not, we welcome any and all to join the class series.

Classes will be held
Thursdays at 10AM - 11:30AM on the following dates:
November 4, 11, 18 and December 2, 9, 16

Workshops will be led by professional choreographers and dancers who will guide participants safely through a warm-up and exercises emphasizing body awareness, flexibility, balance, an enhanced relationship to the floor, the room, and other people, as well as an awakened sense of playfulness and creativity.

The continuation of this project follows the 2019 creation of the ADF-commissioned performance They Are All and is an integrated part of a unique 3-year project led by choreographers Murielle Elizéon and Tommy Noonan in collaboration with a diverse group of dancers living with and without Parkinson’s, dance educators, Physical and Occupational Therapists, and Neuroscientists. The goal is to seed new perspectives on the positive effects of creative, mindful movement for those living with Parkinson’s, and to lay the groundwork for a future formal research project.

Dancing With is funded in part by ADF with a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council. Southern Futures at CPA

Beginning in November, we are excited to help facilitate the first Southern Futures at CPA artist residency with Marcella Murray and David Neumann who will join us from NYC. During the next 3 years, we look forward to helping weave conversations, shared experiences and artistic processes within/with/between guest and local artists, local communities, CPA and UNC at large. Through the integration of embodied practices and restorative justice practices, we are committed to helping create spaces to listen deeply enough to be changed by what we learn.

Please help us launch this bold initiative by joining CPA online on Friday, November 5th at 7:30 for David and Marcella's performance, Primer for an impossible conversationfollowed by a conversation facilitated by Southern Futures Co-director, Jacqueline Lawton.

Reflection: An interview with Tift Merritt on The Spark

A couple weeks ago, Culture Mill co-directors Tommy Noonan and Murielle Elizéon spoke with Tift Merritt on The Spark, about so many things: about "bodystorming" (more on that in another newsletter!), putting the body at the center of their pracitce, recognizing how messy "togetherness" really is, and the courage it takes to not know what lies ahead and keep going anyway.

In Tommy's words:

Speaking with Tift Merritt was a pure joy, she was so welcoming, thoughtful and present, and her questions provided us the opportunity for deep reflection. Furthermore, we were invited to lead a class the following day for the Embodied Communities Research Team at Duke University, and we were able to share some of the conversation with Tift. The depth of that interview, which was played in the studio while the Duke students moved and wrote text in real time, allowed a dynamic exploration of some of the topics unpacked at The Spark in an embodied way. When individuals and institutions alike are generous and collaborative, explorations and relationships open and deepen in unexpectedly exciting and emergent ways.

You can check out more of the fabulous programming by the folx at Carolina Performing Arts, who support the work Tift Merritt does on The Spark, here

Want to support Culture Mill?

We believe there are myriad ways to support local organizations. Especially during the tumultuous times of a pandemic, we understand that not everyone is able to offer financial support. To those who have volunteered their time and emotional encouragement, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

If you are able to offer a financial contribution, we welcome one-time donations. We also encourage you to become a sustainer! With the help of your monthly donations we are able to continue to work towards bringing embodied practices to our ever growing community.

Culture Mill acknowledges that the land now known as Saxapahaw rests on the village sites of the Sissapahaw, Eno, Shakori and the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation whom, along with other tribes, made their homes along the Haw River in what is now known as Alamance County.

We recognize the Native communities in our region today and extend our deepest gratitude to those who have stewarded this land, and offer our respect to their elders, past, present, and future.
