MVCC Updates for
Week of November 29, 2021

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends!

We now have a new Zone 4 Director and 2nd Vice Chair of the PHS & Homeless Committee

Thank you to the stakeholders who took the time to apply for the Zone 4 Director. The candidates all have great qualifications and have a genuine interest the Mar Vista Community.

After each of the very qualified applicants spoke to the community at the Board of Director's meeting on Wednesday, November 17, Jennifer Rafeedie was appointed as the new Zone 4 Director and will be the 2nd Vice Chair of the PHS & Homeless Committee. She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at USC/Children's Hospital Los Angeles. She has spent almost three decades directly helping people with their mental health needs and training other professionals to do the same. Her interests also include the re-development and overdevelopment of Mar Vista. As Zone 4 Director, Jennifer Rafeedie will advocate to promote a high level of community involvement and work with the best intentions for the stakeholders of Mar Vista.

In other news this week:

Homeless Support for a Bicycle Theft Ordinance modeled after a similar ordinance in the City of Los Angeles was passed.

Outreach will be working on door hangers for PLUM, with the purpose of getting stakeholders to meetings and to be aware of new developments in the works in our Mar Vista neighborhoods.

Funding for a newsletter to reach the community to let Mar Vista know what the MVCC committees are working on, and to promote community involvement was also approved. The design will be addressed at a later time.
Along with funding, the council approved the formation of an ad-hoc committee for the creation of the newsletter.

Also approved was advertising in the MVNA newsletter, a MailChimp template for email purposes, and Banners for informing stakeholders of the MVCC.

MVCC voted to approve a letter to support Support Westside Regional Alliance of Council (WRAC) to urge City council member to cooperate with member councils regarding designation of sites under LAMC Sec. 41.18.

Report from the PHS & Homeless Committee re Police Operations:

Bike Theft Info: We have been conducting property crime task force operations in the vicinity of Venice and Ballona Creek as often as our deployment allows.  These deployments are very resource intensive and do not result in impressive results.

Primary challenge our officers encounter in the field is the lack of unique identification information.  We have gone through encampments with over twenty bike frames, run serial numbers and not a single one is reported stolen.  Although we have a strong suspicion most or all were taken in a theft or burglary it is another matter to prove the bike is stolen.

Please share the following mitigation measures which will assist the Police Department in identifying stolen property and returning the items back to their rightful owners.

Take photos of you bike and record your serial number.

Engrave bike components with unique identification information.  Stolen bikes are commonly stripped and repainted after they are stolen.

Lock and secure bikes out of sight.  You would not believe how many bikes are taken when they are leaned (unsecured) against a restaurant, unlocked or open garage, or unsecured in a subterranean garage.   Second story balcony's and outside of your house are also not a safe place to leave a bike unsecured.

REGISTER your bike in https://bikeindex.org/

Bike Index really works.  All of our Police Officers have the Bike Index App on their phone, which makes a search for a stolen bike very efficient in the field.

Mar Vista Park Update:

The homeless encampment was cleared this past week and the residents were offered housing options.

Election Informational Ad Hoc Committee:
Discussion and a vote took place for the creation of an ad hoc committee to inform and educate stakeholders of the 2022 City-wide election(s) with Directors Carolyn Honda, Kathy Rodriguez, and Martin Rubin.

Have a great week!
