Report from the PHS & Homeless Committee re Police Operations:
Bike Theft Info: We have been conducting property crime task force operations in the vicinity of Venice and Ballona Creek as often as our deployment allows. These deployments are very resource intensive and do not result in impressive results.
Primary challenge our officers encounter in the field is the lack of unique identification information. We have gone through encampments with over twenty bike frames, run serial numbers and not a single one is reported stolen. Although we have a strong suspicion most or all were taken in a theft or burglary it is another matter to prove the bike is stolen.
Please share the following mitigation measures which will assist the Police Department in identifying stolen property and returning the items back to their rightful owners.
Take photos of you bike and record your serial number.
Engrave bike components with unique identification information. Stolen bikes are commonly stripped and repainted after they are stolen.
Lock and secure bikes out of sight. You would not believe how many bikes are taken when they are leaned (unsecured) against a restaurant, unlocked or open garage, or unsecured in a subterranean garage. Second story balcony's and outside of your house are also not a safe place to leave a bike unsecured.
REGISTER your bike in https://bikeindex.org/
Bike Index really works. All of our Police Officers have the Bike Index App on their phone, which makes a search for a stolen bike very efficient in the field.
Mar Vista Park Update:
The homeless encampment was cleared this past week and the residents were offered housing options.
Election Informational Ad Hoc Committee:
Discussion and a vote took place for the creation of an ad hoc committee to inform and educate stakeholders of the 2022 City-wide election(s) with Directors Carolyn Honda, Kathy Rodriguez, and Martin Rubin.
