🏟 Good morning! Today is Wednesday, October 27, 2021, and this long-overdue stadium better be fit for a queen.

Women on Top

Shaking It Up

Although things are more or less the same following the federal election, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just shifted his cabinet lineup in a serious way. During a swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall, nine new people were added to Trudeau's cabinet, while three were dropped and several others were shuffled. The new cabinet is comprised of 39 ministers (including the PM), with several stationed in new or revamped roles.

Noteworthy Names

One particularly notable (and historic, we might add) shakeup is Oakville MP Anita Anand, who just became Canada's second-ever woman to become Defence minister. Meanwhile, her predecessor, Harjit Sajjan, has been booted down to minister of International Development, and he'll also be responsible for overseeing Pacific Economic Development Canada. Another momentous move was Mélanie Joly, who was promoted up from minister of Economic Development and Official Languages to Foreign Affairs minister. As far as ministers go, defence and foreign affairs are serious jobs, and we're delighted that Trudeau named two women to take on these top posts.

Other Important Roles

Patty Hajdu, who was at the helm of Canada's fight against COVID, is being replaced by Jean-Yves Duclos, as she embarks on a new role as minister of Indigenous Services. Canada is also getting a new Environment and Climate Change minister. Environmental activist Steven Guilbeault will be taking on the job, just ahead of the upcoming climate change conference in Glasgow (known as COP26). While there are some new faces in Trudeau's cabinet, some ministers are maintaining their old positions, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, as well as Attorney General and Minister of Justice David Lametti. Here's a full list of Trudeau's 2021 Liberal cabinet.

“For us, our marriage was a necessary choice to live while cherishing our hearts."

Japan's Princess Mako, addressing her marriage to commoner Kei Komuro. The two wed without ceremony this week following much public criticism. Mako resigned her royal title in order to marry Komuro, and also declined the US $1.23-million payment to which she is entitled for leaving the royal family.

Advocate for Animals

A central reason people turn to plant-based diets is to protect animal rights, but it's important to bear in mind that Canada's chicken farmers adhere to a mandatory program with third party audits, and they follow very strict regulations when it comes to caring for animals. So, you can rest assured that Canadian chickens are raised in climate-controlled barns, where they are able to roam freely with unlimited access to food and water. To find out more, click here.

WTF: Citrusy-Fresh

We all know the pain of drinking orange juice after we've brushed our teeth, so OJ company Tropicana has come up with a solution (and no, it doesn't involve waiting to brush your teeth until after you've had breakfast). Enter: Tropicana Toothpaste, which tastes like oranges and doesn't include sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), the ingredient that makes OJ taste bad. It's worth noting that SLS-free toothpaste already exists, and you don't have to feel like you're brushing your teeth with orange juice-flavoured paste in order to use it — but to each their orange own.
