Shaking It Up
Although things are more or less the same following the federal election, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just shifted his cabinet lineup in a serious way. During a swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall, nine new people were added to Trudeau's cabinet, while three were dropped and several others were shuffled. The new cabinet is comprised of 39 ministers (including the PM), with several stationed in new or revamped roles.
Noteworthy Names
One particularly notable (and historic, we might add) shakeup is Oakville MP Anita Anand, who just became Canada's second-ever woman to become Defence minister. Meanwhile, her predecessor, Harjit Sajjan, has been booted down to minister of International Development, and he'll also be responsible for overseeing Pacific Economic Development Canada. Another momentous move was Mélanie Joly, who was promoted up from minister of Economic Development and Official Languages to Foreign Affairs minister. As far as ministers go, defence and foreign affairs are serious jobs, and we're delighted that Trudeau named two women to take on these top posts.
Other Important Roles
Patty Hajdu, who was at the helm of Canada's fight against COVID, is being replaced by Jean-Yves Duclos, as she embarks on a new role as minister of Indigenous Services. Canada is also getting a new Environment and Climate Change minister. Environmental activist Steven Guilbeault will be taking on the job, just ahead of the upcoming climate change conference in Glasgow (known as COP26). While there are some new faces in Trudeau's cabinet, some ministers are maintaining their old positions, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, as well as Attorney General and Minister of Justice David Lametti. Here's a full list of Trudeau's 2021 Liberal cabinet.
