"Winter's End" 12x16 Pastel - Available
Demonstration for Pastel Society of New Mexico
November 2021
Ramah, New Mexico

Dear <<First Name>>,

Although winter won't officially arrive for another month, here on our mesa top we have already had snow. In fact, it came in the middle of October during one of the Private Painting Intensives I hold at my studio, forcing us indoors for the day! It wasn't much, just a half-inch, but it was a harbinger of what may come. The leaves of the cottonwoods down by the lake have already faded from gold to brown to almost none. In the fields, a few hardy purple asters persist. Even so, the weather has been beautiful and sunny—one reason why we moved here.

Last year's Holiday Sale seemed to give a lot of people pleasure, so I'm doing it again this year. Until December 31st, you can get 50% off my Southwest paintings. (Sorry, but I'm not offering the paintings from Canada and Maine at this time, and I won't until I'm certain I can return to my Canadian studio, which is where all those paintings are stored. I will have a summer sale of just those items) The discount code is “holiday2021” and you can pay by check or Zelle.  You can see the selections here: https://www.mchesleyjohnson.com/southwest-paintings/

Another year-end tradition is my wall calendar. This year's calendar, alas, features no travel paintings (well, except one from Colorado), but it does offer a dozen showing the beauty I find locally. You'll find all my favorite subjects: gnarled junipers, towering cliffs, pristine lakes and the occasional patch of snow. The calendar is available here: https://www.lulu.com/en/us/shop/michael-chesley-johnson/2022-michael-chesley-johnson-wall-calendar/paperback/product-2gp868.html

My long-awaited book is now available for pre-order. Beautiful Landscape Painting Outdoors: Mastering Plein Air is all set to hit the streets March 1, 2022. The book features 15 master artists who share their tips and techniques. Twenty painting demonstrations are included in all the major mediums, along with hundreds of illustrative photos. You can pre-order the book at both Amazon and Barnes & Noble: My painting retreats continue to be popular. I have two scheduled currently for next year. Unlike the workshops, retreats don't offer formal instruction, but you will get plenty from it. I run the morning critique sessions, give demos and help, and act as “resident mentor” and location guide. Here's what's going on next year, both in places I am very familiar with and eager to share with you:
  • Maine, Lubec / August 7-12, 2022 / $300 for the retreat (meals or lodging not included)
  • New Mexico, Taos / October 2-7, 2022 / $300 for the retreat (meals or lodging not included)
I'm still offering workshops, too. This next year, I will be doing not one but two workshops for the Appalachian Pastel Society, all in conjunction with the annual, three-society statewide pastel exhibition. (This includes the APS, the Piedmont Pastel Society and the Pastel Society of North Carolina.) The workshops will be announced in the near future in the exhibition prospectus at www.appalachianpastelsociety.org
  • May 26-28, 2022: Plein Air Workshop (pastel only)
  • May 30, 2022: Public Demonstration and Opening Reception
  • May 31-June 2, 2022: Studio Workshop (pastel only)
But wait, there's more!

Wyoming, Cheyenne / September 17-20, 2022: Outdoor Study to Studio, Oil Only. / Plein Air Painters of Southeastern Wyoming. $380 for 4 full days. Contact: Joe Eisenhart, joe.eisenhart.je@gmail.com / 307-214-8103

Wyoming will be a new place for me, but I'm very excited to visit and paint there.

Plans for the next Plein Air Convention & Expo continue. The new dates are May 17-21, 2022, and it will be held in Santa Fe. I'll be on the faculty, of course, teaching and demonstrating. You can sign up at www.PleinAirConvention.com I hope to see you there.

For more information on any of this, make sure to check my website (www.MChesleyJohnson.com) and to stay subscribed to this newsletter. And don't forget Instagram, https://www.instagram.com/mchesleyjohnson/ where I post frequently, chiefly new paintings and painting-related travel photos. Also, my blog, where I have more room to expand on painting en plein air - https://mchesleyjohnson.blogspot.com/

That's all for now. Stay well!
