UCD Health Lunch & Learn

During UC Davis Health’s Oct. 13 Lunch and Learn series, hosted by the Public Affairs and Marketing department on a monthly basis, Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, M.D., Ph.D., highlighted the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has presented to the Latino community. A main topic on Aguilar-Gaxiola’s presentation focused on how mental health – especially among children and youth – has deteriorated over the course of the pandemic. In addition, he discussed resources for parents and families and what the UC Davis Health community is doing to combat the mental health crisis.

School of Medicine leads effort to vaccinate vulnerable people who lack access to care

Mark Henderson and his fellow physicians were alarmed when they noticed that nearly 90% of COVID-19 patients they treated this summer at UC Davis Medical Center were unvaccinated.

Many of those patients, they observed, spoke either Spanish or Russian, which seemed to suggest that immigrants from Latin America and Ukraine lacked accurate information about the vaccine or had refused receiving it all together.

Henderson and his colleagues from the UC Davis School of Medicine pored over California Department of Public Health vaccination data, which confirmed some of their suspicions. Then, they shifted their concern into action: They quickly connected with community partners and launched a vaccine effort that operates pop-up clinics. They visit grocery stores, festivals, churches, schools, a farmers market and apartment complexes – often in neighborhoods with dismal vaccination rates.

Invests UC BRAID Funds to
Broaden Support of Underserved Populations

In September 2020, UC Biomedical Research Acceleration, Innovation and Development (UC BRAID) launched the Addressing Health Equity in COVID Research initiative, which provided $100K in support to each of the 5 UC Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) campuses to enhance existing research projects and enable increased inclusion. The initiative was a mechanism to immediately provide support to existing projects (e.g., clinical trials, social/behavioral, and community engagement research) and address the intersecting challenges of COVID-19 and health disparity.
