Here is a message from Superintendent Cheryl Watson-Harris about E-SPLOST:

Greetings DeKalb County School District (DCSD) Family,

DeKalb County School District (DCSD) is a leader in K-12 education and E-SPLOST funding makes sure we continue to lead. Every five years, DCSD assesses facilities, technology equipment, and examines construction to address overcrowding and accommodate growth.  E-SPLOST funding allows for regular improvements, updates, and innovations to keep DeKalb Schools globally competitive with 21st-century competencies, as the district continues to build schools of the future.

ESPLOST is a one-penny sales tax that allows school districts to fund their capital improvements. The voters of DeKalb County will be asked to extend the one-penny sales tax for another five years. This Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax is critical to building our children’s future and equipping our community for success. Special Session on Redistricting Begins November 3, 2021

Here is a five minute quick overview about redistricting, produced by the Georgia General Assembly.

The Special Session for the General Assembly Redistricting will begin next week, after Election Day, on November 3rd

Redistricting is the process by which new congressional and state legislative district boundaries are drawn. Each of Georgia's 14 United States Representatives and 236 state legislators are elected from political divisions called districts. United States Senators are not elected by districts, but by the states at large. District lines are redrawn every 10 years following completion of the United States census. The federal government stipulates that districts must have nearly equal populations and must not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Following the 2020 United States Census, Georgia was apportioned 14 congressional districts, which was unchanged from the number it had after the 2010 census.
  • Georgia's House of Representatives is made up of 180 districts; Georgia's State Senate is made up of 56 districts.
  • In Georgia, both congressional and state legislative district lines are drawn by the state legislature.
Thank you to those that attended our November 19 Town Hall on Redistricting with North Atlanta legislators, either virtually or in person.  Take a look if you missed it - lots of good questions, information, perspectives, and wisdom from our experienced legislators, like Senator Nan Orrock - here!

Benchmarks - How Can We Judge if the Districts Are Fair?

Thank you to Fair Districts GA and the Princeton Gerrymandering Project, for creating these benchmarks, which I referred to in Town Hall, to help us understand how to judge if the districts the General Assembly draws fairly represent the 2020 census population.
