BUZZ Newsletter announcement

We are making some changes to our Buzz Newsletter. First, we would like to announce that from January 1, 2022, the Buzz newsletter will only be available for Volunteer Lethbridge's member agencies.

For years we have shared vital sector information in our Buzz Newsletter with the public. However, we want to make this information more valuable for our member agencies in the upcoming year. This change will give us the chance to tailor information to our valued member agencies. The expected content will include up-to-date sector news, development and funding opportunities, helpful toolkits for the non-profit sector, and much more.

If you wish to continue to receive our BUZZ newsletter, we invite you to sign up as one of our member agencies.

Becoming a valued member agency with Volunteer Lethbridge has many benefits. Learn more here: https://volunteerlethbridge.com/for-organizations/#become-a-member

Freedom to Care Act

The Freedom to Care Act will help nonprofit organizations overcome regulatory barriers to provide service to meet the needs of Albertans.

The Act also ensures protection from liability for volunteers acting in good faith within the scope of their volunteer duties, and who are not negligent or impaired in the performance of those duties. The website offers a wealth of online and downloadable resources to help Alberta’s nonprofit organizations and volunteers better understand and navigate Alberta’s regulatory and insurance landscape as it relates to the nonprofit and charitable sector. We are pleased to share with you the news that the Insurance Toolkit for the Voluntary Sector:

A guide for non-profits and charities has been updated and included as a resource on the Freedom to Care website. https://www.alberta.ca/freedom-to-care.aspx

Civil Society Fund

The second round of funding through the Civil Society Fund (CSF) is now open.

The CSF provides $20 million over 3 years to expand civil society’s capacity to address social problems facing Albertans. The first round of CSF funding was launched in fall 2020.

Civil society includes non-profit and voluntary organizations, registered charities, informal groups or movements pursuing shared interests or values, and private-sector organizations and individuals pursuing social good.

Civil society plays a critical role in the well-being of Albertans and contributes significantly to Alberta’s economy. The intent of the CSF is to support transformational change and improve how civil society organizations function and work together to address pressing social challenges.

CSF funding is one-time only. Funding will not be provided to support the ongoing delivery of social programs and services, or routine operational requirements of organizations.

CSF funding is also time limited. Successful applicants will have 24 months from the date of the grant agreement to complete their grant activities.

Eligible applicants can request up to $1,000,000 for their project. Proposals may be approved at a lesser amount than what was requested.

New HR Toolkit for Nonprofits

Imagine Canada has been working hard on updating resources from the former HRCouncil.ca site to launch a new HR Toolkit for the sector. The launch of this site is scheduled for November 30th and will provide a suite of free services for organizations to use in improving the working environment for their employees. Those interested in the service can now sign up to be notified when the site launches.

Veterans’ Week

Every year during the lead up to Remembrance Day on November 11, we honour those who have served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace.

Canada’s diverse population of Veterans has served on many kinds of missions, both at home and abroad. Learn more about seven of those missions, some marking key anniversaries in 2021, covering more than a century of Canadian military history, here.
