BIKI BLAST: OCTOBER 2021

Biki in Waikiki
Why do you Biki? Maybe you ride to save money on parking and gas, or because it's quicker to get to the office by bike than to battle the traffic. Or, maybe you choose to ride for environmental reasons like Eric and Charlotte. They participated in the Hawaii Bike Challenge back in May to see if they could incorporate more bicycle trips into their daily lives. In the same month, they signed up for their Biki Voyager Plans and downsized from two cars to one EV, substituting many of their previous car trips for Biki rides.
Eric & Charlotte
"People still spend thousands of dollars each year maintaining gas-guzzling cars for the privilege of getting stuck in the very same traffic they're helping to create. It seems there’s a better way. Better for our physical health, and our mental wellbeing, better for our pocketbooks, and for this earth we rely on, too. It may seem odd that such a response may be inspired from utilizing one's local bikeshare service, and yet there it is, and here we are!" - Eric
Eric and Charlotte aren't the only ones who ride for the environmental benefits. 11% of our members report having reduced the number of cars in their households since signing up for Biki memberships, and 49% report driving less often as a result of Biki.

According to the US EPA, the transportation sector generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions - exceeding electricity, industry and agriculture. So, even if you ride for other reasons, each Biki ride you take gets Oahu closer to achieving our city's Climate Action Plan goal of reducing gas emissions by 45% by 2025.

If you have a Biki story, we'd love to hear it. Email us and you may get featured in a future blog or newsletter.

COMMUNITY BOARD
KEEAUMOKU COMPLETE STREETS - Keeaumoku Street was originally designed to optimize motor vehicle traffic flow. The City has now identified it as a “Complete Street” project to implement a new street design that balances the needs of those who walk, bike, use a wheelchair, ride transit or use a car. Improvements under consideration include pedestrian crossing upgrades, street trees, protected turning phases at signalized intersections, improved transit stops, and protected bicycle lanes. Learn more here, and save the date for an upcoming virtual meeting on November 16th @ 6pm.
