Market Intelligence for Lighting Developers

October 2021
DS:  Upcoming code changes will require pink low-voltage wires instead of gray.

No More Gray: Low Voltage Wiring Changes
Source: inside.lighting / C. Weber Marsh, Contributor to the Lighting Controls Association

0-10V dimming wires, the wires used to communicate dimming intensity via a 10-volt signal, can be easily identified on wiring diagrams, installation instructions, and dimmable drivers by their colors: gray and violet (although violet is often referred to as purple). This will soon change, however, as new codes and guidelines take effect.

DS:  Father of LiFi teams up with white laser-light pioneer, KSLD.

Father of LED Li-Fi Surfaces at Kyocera SLD for Laser Li-Fi
Source: LEDs Magazine / Mark Halper

One of the more promising sectors for the long-gestating market for Li-Fi is aerospace. Use Li-Fi instead of Wi-Fi to deliver Internet on a commercial plane, and you can avoid radio interference and other issues that can undermine inflight Wi-Fi.

So it made sense a few weeks back when laser chip innovators Kyocera SLD Laser announced they teamed up with Seattle-based aerospace data networking specialist Spectrum Networks LLC to help develop onboard Li-Fi systems.

...But what stood out just as much in the announcement was another prominent name — Harald Haas, whom Kyocera SLD and Spectrum described in a joint press release as having “direct involvement” in the project in his capacity as a “KSLD Senior Advisor.”

DS: Evidence increases about the detrimental impacts of low wavelength/white light on insects and animals. Excess light has implications for pollination.

Study Shows Excess Light Impacts Caterpillar Population
Source: LEDs Magazine / Mark Halper

Scientists studying the effect of outdoor lighting on moth caterpillars in about 30 areas in England have concluded that the illumination is generally bad for the insects, with the broader-spectrum LED lights generally worse than the more limited spectrum but still harmful high-pressure sodium (HPS) and low-pressure sodium (LPS).

DS: This is an interesting critique of the new Philips 210 lpw filament lamp.

Philips: Launch of 210lm/W Filament Lamps, But . . .
Source: The Light Review / John Bullock

It was in Hong Kong at the 2016 International Lighting Fair where I saw my first LED filament lamp. Up to that point, the retro-fit LEDs available just weren’t (and still aren’t) hitting the visual and performance sweetspot. They were (are) less than attractive to look at and the use of the opal envelope seriously compromised lamp efficacy. At a time when decorative lighting was finally making inroads into the design landscape, it was vital that we found something that mimicked the old GLS filament lamp . . . and here it was!

DS:  The history of LED commercial lighting rebates- and where they’re heading.

A History of LED Rebates
Source: EC&M / Randy Young

LED lighting is seemingly everywhere now, from schools and offices to parking lots and transportation centers. It's hard to believe that it was a fledgling technology with very little market penetration not too long ago. A big factor in getting LEDs to gain traction so quickly was the availability of rebates to help offset the high initial prices. While rebates for commercial lighting have been around since the 1980s, rebates for LEDs specifically didn't see widespread acceptance until 2011. Now, 10 years later, we can see how LED rebates have evolved over time and where they may go in the future.

Which Luminaires Get the Highest Rebates?
Source: EC&M / Randy Young

As LED lighting continues to penetrate the market, people assume rebates for these products must be dwindling. In reality, commercial lighting rebates are as strong as ever. Although rebates for some upgrades, such as screw-in A19s and PARs, have decreased over the years, some product categories still receive significant incentives.

DS:  Highlights from the latest cannabis lighting market report:
  • LED lighting is the top-preferred lighting method among cultivators throughout North America, leading across all categories: propagation, vegetation and flowering.
  • LED usage for cannabis cultivation has increased more than 45 percent for all stages of growth since the initial report in 2016.
  • Recent surges in LED adoption are partially attributed to the increasing implementation of vertical racks, which saw slight increases across vegetation and flowering.
  • 63 percent of growers who are not currently using LEDs during flowering are considering implementing the solutions in the next 12 months.
  • Survey results reported 60 percent of participants indicated that lighting fixture dimming capabilities are as “important” or “very important” to their cultivation operations.
  • 15 percent of cultivators said managing energy costs is the greatest challenge when considering LED lighting.
