We're Thankful for You!

A Message from Executive Director Tyler Shade

As we enter into the holiday season and the final months of 2021 I can’t help but reflect on the impactful year we’ve had, despite the challenges and hardships faced. While 2021 saw a slight return to normalcy for some in our community, this year continued to be full of hardships for many, including the families we serve, our staff, and our volunteers. As we celebrate Thanksgiving and a start to the holiday season, I’m sure we’ll all be counting our blessings with more purpose than before.

As our community continues to grapple with the ramifications of COVID19 and a slow but steady return to normalcy, the increased need for our services remains. More families than ever before require shelter, meals, case management, loving support, and a helping hand in their time of need. Family Promise serves a vital need in the community, and staff, volunteers, and community support are necessary to answer the call from those who need us to get back on their feet. In this trying time, it’s your support, and our service-driven communities, that continue to answer the call for our friends and neighbors in need.

Words can’t express how thankful I am to our staff, board, volunteers, and all of our supporters. Despite the challenges of this past year, everyone has put their best foot forward and continued supporting Delaware’s families experiencing homelessness.

THANK YOU for being the moms, fathers, grandparents, brothers, sisters, neighbors, and friends that provide support, love, and hospitality for families in need. You’re what makes Family Promise what we are, you’re the difference. We’re a community helping neighbors when they’re down.

I’m incredibly blessed to be part of such an impactful organization surrounded by such wonderful friends. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting me, our staff, and Family Promise. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season full of joy, happiness, and love.

With Sincere Appreciation,

Tyler Shade
Executive Director

Baheya's Story

"Carmen Was Awesome!"

Baheya moved to the area from North Carolina in July 2021 but before that Baheya experienced the scariest hardship a parent may ever have to face, losing 2 children and her own husband in the span of 3 years.
She initially moved into her sister’s house in Pennsylvania but was unable to stay due to both of them having several kids. She made the move to Delaware to find stability and applied for state services to find a temporary roof over her head.
She was sheltered initially in a hotel and while working with her state Case Manager, they recommended her to Family Promise to find stable shelter for her and her family.
Once recommended to Family Promise, Baheya was assigned to Case Manager Carmen who set up a personalized plan to stabilize Baheya long term.
Carmen walked her through the exact tasks Baheya needed to do and thoroughly explained what Carmen planned to do as well, to assist her in the quickest and best way possible.
With Carmen’s help and transparency, and Baheya’s determination, she found housing on the VERY same day as her initial intake!
All Baheya needed was a little help. We provided the framework that turns compassion into action. By utilizing our resources, support, and program benefits, Family Promise was able to stabilize her family and empower them to achieve sustainable independence.

Giving Tuesday!
Find out how you can give this coming Giving Tuesday (November 30th)

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are right around the corner, and the Holiday shopping season is almost in full swing. While you shop for your loved ones this holiday season, we ask that you remember us on Giving Tuesday.

Giving Tuesday is an international generosity movement, a day that encourages people to do good. It's a day where individuals take a moment to reflect after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, to consider making a difference in their community.

We ask that you think of Family Promise this Giving Tuesday. Any donation or gift goes to support the families we serve. The hope that these gifts provide the children in our shelter will truly bring a smile to their faces, and yours.

Volunteer Spotlight

Joanne Graves from Heritage Presbyterian

Joanne is a proud member of Heritage Presbyterian. She is known as her congregation's 'food guru' and goes above and beyond to support her congregation, and provide extra meals to families.
Joanne's congregation coordinator, Kristin Hrenko, stated "Joanne was one of the first ones to jump in headfirst with me when we started at Family Promise", and that Joanne "Always makes sure everyone gets fed!"
"Joanne loves kids. All kids. Big kids. Little kids. Middle kids. She is such a blessing to the families of Heritage, so we’re thankful to be able to share her with Family Promise families too. There’s nothing better as a parent to see your kids well-loved by someone.  And I think the families are blessed by that too."
“Joanne loves to serve others – she helps with Family Promise, Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes, our youth group, nursey, and chaperoning our kids at the Good Neighbors Youth Camp week. Joanne also loves gardening & healthy eating – she’s even one of the founders of our Church’s Living Hope Community Garden!”
Kristin said one of their favorite parts of Family Promise is “how easy it is for everyone (big or small) to find their part to do. Joanne is one of our youth leaders, so she’s now getting the youth group involved in serving a meal during our weeks too.”
Joanne was nominated by Kristin Hrenko. If you know someone who you would like to nominate to be 'spotlighted' please email Madeline@familypromisede.org to submit nominations. Congratulations to Joanne, and thank you for all you do for Family Promise & Heritage Presbyterian!
