Road to Glasgow: commitments to reduce emissions
With the COP26 underway, the eyes of the international community are set on Glasgow with the hope that negotiations will lead to strong commitments for the reduction of emissions to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Several countries have taken the first step and committed to climate resilient, low carbon sustainable health systems: Malawi, Sao Tome and Principe, Cape Verde, Madagascar, Fiji, Lao, Kenya, Spain, and Sierra Leone were among the first to take climate action. And, we hope to hear from more in the lead up to COP26!
The health sector is also stepping up to act on climate and health by joining the United Nations Race to Zero Campaign, via our Health Care Climate Challenge. Momentum for health care climate action builds with over 50 health care systems representing more than 14,000 hospitals and health centers from 21 countries committing to achieve net zero emissions before 2050.
At the COP26, Health Care Without Harm is participating in a series of high-level events in the blue zone and out, including co-organizing a Futures Lab on Climate-Smart Health Care for a Healthier Planet with the UNFCCC, the World Health Organization, Doctors Without Borders, the Public Health Foundation of India and Greener NHS.
