Townsville Vaccination Hub 


Townsville Multicultural Support Group (TMSG) held COVID-19 vaccination hubs during October. On the first day, 38 people were vaccinated in less then 2 hours with people continuing to arrive after the vaccine hub had closed. Media was also there on the day promoting the vaccine hubs. COVID-19 mass vaccination of Cairns multicultural community - Centacare FNQ


More than 100 of Centacare FNQ clients from multicultural backgrounds were vaccinated against COVID-19 this week at the Cairns Mass Vaccination Hub at the Cairns Convention Centre. This was part of a two month process involving language and transport support for the members of the Cairns' Congolese, Bhutanese and Burmese community.

New User Guide for Health Service Organisations

New Clinical Guidelines for clinicians working with patients from refugee backgrounds

This resource is endorsed by the Refugee Primary Health Care Clinical Advisory Group QLD auspiced through the Refugee Health Network Qld, Brisbane South PHN and Brisbane North PHN.

ATAGI expanded guidance on acute major medical conditions that warrant a temporary medical exemption relevant for COVID-19 vaccines


COVID-19 vaccines have been demonstrated to be safe and effective and as such are recommended for all Australians from 12 years of age. There are very few situations where a vaccine is contraindicated and as such, medical exemption is expected to be rarely required.

CEH launches talktesttreat.org.au


talktesttreat.org.au was launched during STI testing week in October and contains tailored resources addressing cultural and language issues across all aspects of STI testing. It also contains targeted social media messaging and downloadable campaign material. Read more here.

Congolese community leaders talk about the COVD 19 vaccine in Swahili

Mike Fideli, President - Congolese Community Of Queensland, Costa Mukendi, Pastor, President - AusCongo and Bill Biriwandi - NAATI Interpreter talk about the COVID-19 vaccine in Swahili. This video was filmed after a COVID 19 vaccine information session provided by the CALD COVID Health Engagement Project.

Aaron Sadaat, Queensland Afghan Community Association President talks about the COVID 19 vaccine and how we know that is safe. This video was developed by Mater Refugee Health with support from the CALD COVID-19 Health Engagement Project, based on information from Queensland Health.

New Translated Resources about Cervical Screening



True Relationships and Reproductive Health is proud to launch Your Health, Your Future: Get a Cervical Screening Test - a simple resource guided by women from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

The resources are available in 10 languages: 
Arabic, Burmese, Chinese (Simplified), Dari, English, Hindi, Somali, Swahili, and Vietnamese, as well as an English version designed for the Pasifika community. Download the translated online resources here.

Culturally Responsive Suicide Prevention Training for Human Service Workers


QTMHC developed the Culturally Responsive Suicide Prevention Training for Human Service Workers to upskill human service workers on how to identify and support people from culturally diverse backgrounds who may be at risk of suicide.

Other useful resources and training:
  • Supporting a person in your community who is suicidal- a suicide prevention community resource. Available in 26 different languages and simple English. Visit their website here.
  • Suicide Prevention Resources Hub- which includes resources for service providers and people from a CALD background and links to organisations and services that can provide mental health, suicide prevention, or multicultural psychosocial supports. This hub can be accessed through their website.

Queensland Preparing Interpreters (QPI) Project- 2022 Scholarships

The QLD Preparing Interpreters Project is an initiative being offered by AUSIT and NAATI to upskill interpreters of languages in demand. This scholarship will allow successful applicants to attend a 10-week Interpreting Skills for NAATI Certification Training Online Course with TAFE SA, which is scheduled to run between February and June 2022. Upon completion of the course, graduates will sit the NAATI Certified Practicing Interpreter (CPI) test in their language.

For the February 2022 intake, in demand languages that will attract scholarship support are: 
Arabic, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Korean, Somali, Kiswahili, Farsi, Kurdish, Burmese, Dari, Karen, Nepali, Persian, Thai, Hazaragi, Punjabi.

Survey: Information need assessment about COVID-19 vaccines


Australian National University are trying to understand what migrants in Australia think and need to know about COVID-19 vaccines and the Australian COVID-19 vaccination program.

An online questionnaire will take about 15 minutes to complete and you can win one (1) of ten (10) $100 Coles e-gift cards.

The Birth Experience Study (BESt)

As part of a new national study exploring the birthing experiences of women over the last five years, Western Sydney University researchers are calling for women across Australia to contribute their stories.

The research team is encouraging women from diverse backgrounds, including those who speak a language other than English to participate, with the survey now available in seven languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Filipino, Hindi, Persian, Thai, and Vietnamese.

Support for Bilingual and Bicultural health workforce

 
The Migrant and Refugee Health Partnership and the Victorian African Health Action Network are jointly holding a roundtable on Australia’s bilingual/bicultural health workforce. The purpose of this roundtable is to bring together bilingual/bicultural health workers supporting the provision of health care to culturally and linguistically diverse communities to develop a greater shared understanding of the unique contribution that bilingual/bicultural health workers make to the healthcare system, identify and articulate the key issues encountered by this workforce, and develop recommendations for collaboration and support that would be beneficial to strengthening the workforce.

Harmony Place Services 


Harmony Place is offering free mental health services for people with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

Harmony place offers a number of services including Psychological assessments, Therapeutic support and wellbeing groups via zoom. The Harmony Place Psychological Clinic is continuing to support new and regular clients through the COVID-19 pandemic, no GP referral needed. Download flyer here to register

Embrace Multicultural Mental Health Project 


The Embrace Project is looking for applicants from across Australia who are passionate about multicultural mental health and ready to contribute to the next phase of the project to achieve real change. The project aims to improve mental health services for people from CALD backgrounds by helping organisations and workers to better understand and respond to the needs of Australia’s CALD communities as well as activities within communities concerning stigma reduction and information provision.

Group Members may be eligible for the payment of sitting fees and all travel and accommodation expenses associated with meeting attendance, will be paid for.

New Platform to assist public health students learn about equity launched


Health Without Borders is a platform for public health students to learn more about the issue of equity for the mental health of asylum seekers and other issues affecting the health and well-being of migrant populations.
In this pilot series the concept of health inequities and its relevance in addressing the poor mental health outcomes of some asylum seekers living among the communities in Australia is unpacked.
