Opening Prayer
Prayer for Compassion

God is present in everything.  In the universe, in creation, in me and all that happens to me, in my brothers and sisters, in the church, and in the Eucharist -- everywhere. --Thea Bowman
God in the glimmer of a firefly, God in the fiery light of the sun:

The early church taught that your face could be glimpsed in all creation, yet over the centuries too many humans have looked at the natural world as resource rather than revelation.  As we look out the window, go for a stroll, watch the slow unfurling of the seasons, help us to see clearly your presence leading us to walk gently and compassionately in the world.  Amen.

Pastoral Care
Letter from Priest Doyle
Please contact me if you are going to be in the hospital or have surgery, including out-patient procedures.  I would love to be there to pray with you and anoint you for healing before your surgery.

It would be good if you could let me know the name of the hospital or surgical center where you will be.  Also, let me know the date of your surgery, the time of your surgery, and the time you are to report to the hospital or surgery clinic.  I will be happy to visit you while you are in the hospital after your surgery.

I would love to visit you at your home whether you are sick or well.  Please contact me if you would like a visit.  520-268-0366, stpatricksrector@gmail.com.

I am training a pastoral care team at Saint Patrick’s.  This ministry will provide pastoral visits.  These leaders will become a community of lay volunteer pastoral care givers united in prayer, shaped by Benedictine spirituality and equipped to serve in pastoral care ministries.

This pastoral care training provides a way for individuals to acquire the skills to handle different situations in their every day journey and to grow spiritually deeper in their relationship with God through a pastoral care ministry.  This experience builds community and develops spiritually-centered pastoral caregivers.  Pastoral Visitors learn to “listen with the ear of the heart,” and to be present in a compassionate, listening, and non-controlling manner in order to make a difference in the wholeness of others.

Eucharistic Visitors are trained to develop a deeper appreciation of the Eucharistic rites and other Sacraments, and the importance of sharing this gift with those in our parish family who are unable to come to church on Sundays.  They take Communion from the Reserved Sacrament to those who are hospitalized, ill, or homebound.  Eucharistic Visitors share prayers, Communion, and information about parish life on Sundays following The Holy Eucharist.

After Training is completed and the Pastoral Visitors and Eucharistic Ministers are commissioned in a Sunday service, they will receive ongoing support and training through monthly Ministry Team Gatherings, called Circle of CareYou do not need to wait.  If you want any kind of visit or home Communion, please phone me at 520-268-0366.

Yours in Christ,

Priest Doyle

Come Observe Día de Los Muertos
All Saints Day at St Patrick's
All parishes of the Diocese have been invited to join in observing El Día de Los Muertos on All Saints Sunday, November 7, 2021.

Like the Episcopal liturgy for All Saints Day, traditional observances of El Día de Los Muertos are marked by solemn words and dignified processions, as well as fragrant flowers and joyous songs.

The Mexican festival also invites a spontaneity of expression and an almost macabre sense of humor that helps participants come to terms with the reality of death.

Ofrendas (altars) are richly decorated with flowers (usually cempasúchiles or Mexican marigolds), photos, and mementos of the dead. Other items are more playful: calaveras (fancifully figured skulls), catrinas (whimsically well-dressed skeletons), favorite foods, and beloved beverages.

We will have our own Afrenda, or altar, in theNarthex on November 7th. Come participate and bring a photo(s) of loved ones to add to the altar. The photos will remain on the altar during the church service, and may be picked up after the service.

We hope to see you at the service.

Did You Know?
Bobbiejo, our wonderful church administrator, is expecting a little girl in late November and everyone, men, women and children are invited to a baby shower on Saturday, October 30 from 2-4p.m at Rich and Betsy Randolph’s, 8399 Oakmont Dr., Santa Rosa 95409.
When asked about gifts she and Jason needed an infant car seat (they borrowed one for Ezra) and a bedside bassinet.  The bassinet is available at Target for around $200.00 and the Chicco infant car seat is available at Amazon for about $180.00.  If you would like to contribute to these purchases, please mail your check made out to Sandy Keith with a memo “baby shower,” to 278 Beech Ave., Santa Rosa 95409.
Please RSVP to Sandy only if you plan to attend at (707)539-3871 or in an email to skeith4@sbcglobal.net. before Oct. 25.
It will be a wonderful occasion for us to be together and celebrate the impending arrival of this little baby girl.  Sandy, Ron, Betsy and Rich look forward to seeing many of you on Oct. 30.

Blessings Bags
Collecting More!
Once again, the people of St. Patrick’s and Kenwood Community Church came through with Blessing Bags for the Redwood Gospel Mission to distribute.  Those who receive those simple meals know that someone in the community cares about their welfare.  In addition to the meal in the bag there is a short message of encouragement and support.
The next date for Blessing Bags is November 3, Wednesday.  I look forward to filling our trunk with lots of bags from St. Patrick’s, Kenwood Community Church and Emmaus congregation.  Please deliver bags between October 31 and November 3 to Betsy Randolph, 8399 Oakmont Dr., Santa Rosa, 95409.  Since Oct. 31 is a Sunday, you could bring your Blessing Bags to St. Patrick’s and I can put them in my car after the service. Please call me at (408)981-2024 if you have any questions about what and how to pack them.  While it only cost me about $20.00 for 8 Blessing Bags, it probably means the world to the recipients.  God bless you all!

New Grief and Loss Group
Lead By
Pastor Larry Hallett
Pastor Larry Hallett of Kenwood Community Church, is leading a grief and loss support group in Oakmont on Tuesday mornings, 9:00-10:00 a.m. in a suite behind the OVA office.

It is an outreach of the hospice for which he works. It is a newly formed group and Pastor Hallett wants to expand their outreach and invites the parishioners of St. Patrick's to join. It is open to anyone in Oakmont who has experienced the loss of someone or something near and dear.

Here is an excerpt from a recent devotional thought which was shared with the group: “Those who have gone ‘down’ are the only ones who understand ‘up.’” And here are some reflections based on that thought: “While down is painful, it is also normal and necessary sometimes. Yet from the depths of our down, we can still look up. We can remember times of love and joy. We can connect with others we love and who love us back. And we can schedule some moments of levity, entertainment, and distraction into our down days…. We can invite some up into our down. And we can also hold onto hope for more up in our futures.”

Reservations are not necessary, just come and join in.

Afghan Resettlement Update

New Afghan Refugees are arriving almost daily in Sacramento. They have endured a long journey from Afghanistan to Sacramento, often including stops in another country before landing at a US military base where more processing took place. So, when our new neighbors finally arrive in their new home town, they are anxious to get settled and restart their family, work, and community lives.

There are many ways for you and your congregation to help our new neighbors do this, no matter where in the Diocese you are located. Take a look at the newly revised Ways to Help flyer and choose the opportunity that works for you. The flyer reflects the current needs of our resettlement agency partners. Please post and distribute the flyer in your congregation.

Sonoma County Adopts an Exemption to Mandatory Indoor Masking

Woman Taking Off Mask

Sonoma County Health Officer Dr. Sundari Mase today amended a health order to allow certain stable groups of people, such as those in gyms, classes and offices, the option of lifting the mandate on wearing masks indoors if they verify that all members of the group are fully vaccinated for COVID-19. PRESS RELEASE | AMENDMENT

Update on Booster Shots

Vaccine vials

As of Sunday, 15,978 vaccine booster shots had been administered to Sonoma County residents. A key advisory committee to the FDA voted unanimously on Thursday to recommend a third dose of the Moderna vaccine for many of its recipients. The same panel voted unanimously on Friday to recommend booster shots of Johnson & Johnson’s one-dose vaccine for all adult recipients. People who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine may be better off with a booster from Moderna or Pfizer, according to preliminary data from a federal clinical trial published last week. Those receiving a J&J booster saw antibodies go up fourfold. Switching to a Pfizer-BioNTech booster raised antibody levels by a factor of 35. A Moderna booster raised them 76-fold.

Original Goodness

Made in the Divine Image
Wednesday, October 27, 2021

Father Richard views religion’s purpose as reminding us of who we truly are:

The essential work of religion is to help us recognize and recover the divine image in ourselves and everything else too. Whatever we call it, this ‘image of God’ is absolute and unchanging. There is nothing we can do to increase or decrease it. It is not ours to decide who has it or does not have it. It is pure and total gift, given equally to all. [1]

It is often the mystics who understand that “My deepest me is God!” to paraphrase St. Catherine of Genoa (1447–1510). [2] In these passages, contemplative writer Ursula King presents three mystics who saw God’s divine image as more fundamental in the human soul than sin. The fourth century theologian and mystic Gregory of Nyssa (c. 335–c. 394) held that:

In each human soul there exists a divine element, a kind of inner eye capable of glimpsing something of God, for there exists a deep relationship, an affinity between human and divine nature. [3]

The medieval mystic Mechtild of Magdeburg (c. 1212–c. 1282) yearned for the soul’s original intimacy with God:

Mechtild’s work is motivated by the deep desire that the soul return to its original being in God. It is her true nature to live in the flowing light of the Godhead, just as it is a bird’s nature to fly in the air and a fish’s nature to swim in water. She has emanated from the heart of God, where she must return, but she discovers her utter nakedness before and in God: “Lord, now I am a naked soul!” Yet her intense love pours out in praise of God:

O God! so generous in the outpouring of Thy gifts!
So flowing in Thy Love!
So burning in Thy desire!
So fervent in union!
O Thou who doest rest on my heart
Without whom I could no longer live! [4]

In the early seventeenth century, Francis de Sales (1567–1622) became Bishop of Geneva, Switzerland. In a time of deep religious division, he was known for his belief in “original goodness.” Ursula King continues:

Whereas many other spiritual writers in seventeenth-century France held a pessimistic view of the human being, stressing sin and abnegation, Francis de Sales believed in the inherent goodness of human nature. Human beings have a natural inclination to love God, due to the correspondence between divine goodness and human souls, which bear some kind of divine imprint or spark. God holds us by this goodness as in some way linked to himself “as little birds by a string, by which He can draw us when it pleases His Compassion.” Francis does not speak about the “ground” of the soul like the Rhenish [or Rhineland] mystics, but refers to the “mountain top” of the soul, the utmost summit where self ends and God begins, a no-place which is yet a place, a dwelling place that can only be reached by an all-transforming movement of love. [5]

Story from Our Community:
I remember going to confession as a young boy trembling that I had stolen 6 pennies from my father’s shop. I was told how lucky I was to receive absolution and what would have happened had I died before I got to confess. That was the One Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church we grew up in here in Ireland in the 1940s. Thank you, Fr. Richard, and your amazing ecumenical team in CAC for changing my perception of God. I am not scared of God anymore. —Brian M.
