October 2021 edition

It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.

This month, I’ve read this…

Shades of the 1350s. This is what happened after the Black Death, except then the overwhelming migration was to growing urban centers. Fascinating. —Deb

this,

and this!

I’ve been watching

The #EarthShot programme on @BBC and it’s is so eye-opening. So many of our problems are about the sheer scale of human interventions. We can have hydroelectric dams--but not ones that destroy river systems. We can eat meat--but less. Everybody has to do their part and make changes NOW.

The changes in industrial scale farming are particularly compelling. And returning the wolves to Yellowstone--brought a whole ecosystem back into balance. As always, it is diversity that will save us.

I wish every #EarthshotPrize finalist could win. They are all so inspiring. The whole project has changed the way I feel about what we can do, individually and collectively, to make a difference. Thank you for giving me hope.

Scene from a long Sunday walk from Aldwych-Strand and St Dunstan in the West to the Old Bailey. Took a few detours into the courtyards off Fleet Street which are always so ghostly and took time to look up. In doing so I spied the statue of Elizabeth I that was once on the west side of Ludgate near where I ended my walk. It was carved in 1586 and is a rare survivor of the period. London always surprises and always inspires. #london🇬🇧 #londonlife
