This month, the Health Research Authority (HRS) #MakeItPublic strategy has taken its first steps towards increasing transparency and openness in health and social care research. From 2022 the HRA will register clinical trials with ISRCTN, taking the burden away from research sponsors and researchers. New clinical trials approved by HRA will be automatically registered to ensure that information is publicly available for the benefit of all.

Taking steps to improve amendments to research projects after approval, the HRA are also seeking the views of sponsor trial managers, as well as participating NHS and Health and Social Care (HSC) sites across the UK with a new survey on issues with the implementation of amendments at participating sites across the UK. 

The Chief Scientist Office is looking to appoint a Chair for one of its two research funding Committees: the Health Improvement, Protection & Services (HIPS) Research Committee that considers applications for research aimed at improving or protecting population health or improving the quality, safety and/or effectiveness of healthcare in Scotland. Expressions of interest are invited from established academic and/or clinical health researchers based in a Scottish University or Health Board who have extensive experience of the conduct of health research in areas within the remit of the committee, the appraisal of research grant applications, and research grant funding committees.

Also this month, applications are sought for a range of programmes - NIHR Population Health Career Scientist Award, the NES/CSO Clinical Lectureships, and trainee members to The Public Health Research (PHR) programme Prioritisation Committee. A range of virtual events take place in November, including Crohn's and Colitis UK Research Day on Saturday 6 November, and the Inspiring Innovation in Women's and Children's Care event on Tuesday 30 November. Registration is also open for the Neuroprogressive and Dementia Network Conference on 3 December. New reports on CSO funded research projects have also been published this month, including COVID-19 biomarkers, post-COVID-19 blood pressure, a participatory digital wellbeing platform and a Scottish Type 2 Diabetes Policy Model.
