'Accounting in a Social Context' in '21st Century Approaches to Management & Accounting Research'

IIDB member, Orla Feeney wrote a chapter entitled Accounting in a Social Context in an open access book called ‘21st Century Approaches to Management & Accounting Research’. The chapter calls for a deeper understanding of the relationship between accounting and big data, AI and sustainability.

The chapter moves beyond normative assertions and suggestions of how things ought to be. Future research in accounting must acknowledge that boundaries shift and alter in time and space. ‘The realm of the measurable’ is expanding (Quattrone, 2016, p. 120) with the result that research approaches characterised by epistemological diversity, framed in psychology, sociology or organisational theory will provide a fresh perspective in examining the evolution of accounting in a less static way.

Tackling Online Hate in Football

We are pleased to announce that Gary Sinclair, Theo Lynn and Pierangelo Rosati won a joint funding award from the Irish Research Council and the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council for an innovative digital humanities project.

The project entitled 'Tackling Online Hate in Football' will explore the potential of digital technologies to transform understanding of online hate. It aims to show how online practices and experiences have the potential to shape and influence our perceptions of matters concerning racism, sexism and sectarianism. Through analysis of online discourses, it will identify flashpoints and strategies for social media companies, policymakers and campaigners to tackle hate crime, identity politics and communication in a digital age.

Researchers will work with partners to develop educational workshops, policies and specific machine learning procedures in which to identify and combat online hate on social media.

Examining & Managing the Spread of Vaccination Misinformation on Twitter

A study by Gary Sinclair, Pierangelo Rosati, Theo Lynn and Antonia Egli titled  'Questionable Views Shared in Interesting Times: Examining & Managing the Spread of Vaccination Misinformation on Twitter' investigates and examines the spread of vaccination misinformation on Twitter. The study was presented at the 2021 Irish Academy of Management Annual Conference.

In comparing the #antivaxx discourse on Twitter pre-and during COVID-19, this research analyses the development of an online dialogue over time. It argues that the adverse impacts of false information on social media can be mitigated by better understanding the human and non-human identities, networks, and discourses of those who aim to exert influence online, particularly with respect to vaccination.
