Diocese of Northampton- Becoming a Local Listener
As you know, Pope aFrancis has called a synod in Rome in 2023 and has asked that every diocese across the world offers opportunities for all of us to listen and speak to each other graciously. To make the Synod happen across our own diocese, we need  people to answer Pope Francis’ call.  Conversations can be held in parishes or schools, in local Catholic groups, or around kitchen tables.  They can be  organised and facilitated groups, or informal chats.

We know that people are very busy, especially at this time of year.  So we are asking you to get involved in a particular and limited way.  Local listeners will be our key gatherers, the hands and ears of the synod process.  We are asking each one to organise either one group or a couple of individual conversations.  Groups could be a formal parish meeting, the group that you’re already involved in, or friends, family or others on the margins.   It could be a group of school mums, baptismal or first communion parents, old folks in a nursing home, the young people in your parish or school, a group in a prison. The Pope has particularly asked for existing structures, such as parish councils and pastoral area councils to take part. Once you’ve had your conversation, write up your notes, and submit them via the portal on the website (coming soon).  Local listeners will also be invited to take part in the final assembly.

To find out more, come along to our webinar on 1st November, which will explore our diocesan process in more detail. https://synod_webinar.eventbrite.co.uk

Register your interest in being a local listener here: (email going to either synod@northamptondiocese.com or avril@northamptondiocese.com)

Come along to our training session on 6th November, 1-4pm, St Mary’s Woburn Sands, to explore what being a local listener will mean. https://synod_listening.eventbrite.co.uk

First Communion 2022
Thank you for your patience over the last few weeks whilst we began to make preparations for this year’s First Communion preparation programme. As you know, because of last year’s disruption, there are two year groups (Year 3 and Year 4) to prepare this year. At the back of church or in the sacristy on Sunday you will find a registration form. If your child is in Year 3 or over and would like to make their First Communion this year, please complete one of the forms and we will get back to you with details of the appropriate programme.
Registration will close on 15th November, so please return your forms promptly.

November is traditionally a month when we pray for those who have died. We will remember our loved ones who have died at all of the Masses throughout the month. If you would like us to pray for anyone in particular, please complete one of the forms at Mass or Email their names to the office by clicking on the button below, and we will place them before the altar.

Mass on All Souls Day
We will celebrate Mass at St Augustine’s at 7.30pm on Tuesday 2nd November

Those who have died recently
Please pray for all of our loved ones who have died recently, especially:
  • Ian Ward whose Funeral will take place on 12th November at St Mary's Church at 2.30pm.  Reception into Church at 4pm on Thursday 11th November.
  • Karen McCormack whose Funeral will take place on 12th November at St Edward's Church, at  1.45pm.
"Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light come upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen"

Pray for them

Earlier in the year many of us signed the CAFOD petition at Mass joining the thousands of other CAFOD supporters urging Boris Johnson to show leadership at the ‘COP26’ climate talks this week they were passed to Number 10 by senior faith leaders.

The representatives from Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist and Hindu groups delivered a message to Downing Street on 18 October on behalf of faith communities which included demands for action from parishes and schools across England and Wales.

The message from the faith leaders told the Prime Minister he has “a unique position to lead the world in tackling the climate crisis” with the Glasgow summit less than two weeks away.

A global day of action is planned for November 6th with a march in support of the call for action starting at 11am in London until about 4:30pm.

Interested in joining the march? Click on the button below to register your interest – and drop us a line through the Cluster office and we can travel down to London together.

Love Christmas
Advent and Christmas should be a season of kindness. But, for too many people across our diocese, with the spectre of COVID and the many issues this has caused still looming, this Christmas may be one of isolation, deprivation and challenges.
The diocese is putting on an online workshop on Thursday 18th November at 7.30pm to explore a number of practical ways that we can reach out into our community, from outdoor cribs to bags of kindness, including the ecumenical Love Christmas Campaign. We will explore Ideas for every parish and school community to get involved. To find out more or register click below.

News from St Edward's
  • Saturday Evening Mass
At a recent parish meeting, we decided to trial celebrating Mass again on a Saturday evening. It would seem inappropriate to simply increase the number of Masses if there is no need or demand for them. So begining on Saturday 20th November, we will begin to celebrate Mass at 6pm and review the numbers in the new year.
  • Social dates for your diary
19th  November : Sheila's Soups 12noon
27th November:  Celebrating Advent afternoon 2pm to 4pm (cakes, jewellery, craft group, tombola, drinks and mince pies).
8th December:  Guild Singers Concert
17th December: Orchestra Concert
Save the dates - more details to be published nearer the time.
Mass at St Mary's, Woburn Sands,
As part of our gentle increase in the number of weekday masses we celebrate in our parishes. From next Thursday, 4th November, we will begin to celebrate  Mass on Thursday mornings at 10am at St Mary’s in Woburn Sands. We will continue until Christmas and then take a look at how things have been going.
Lunchtime Fellowship

Saint Vincent de Paul Society
Thank you to the  Parishioners of both St Bede's and Christ the King for your support in the collection last week which amounted to £405.40p.This will go a long way in supporting our local Community with Food and Christmas hampers for both families and the elderly.
The SVP or St Vincent de Paul Society, is a group of volunteer parishioners who set out to help anyone in need. The group is very small and the work consists mainly of visiting the lonely and housebound, but also assisting when needed with household items and emergency food.  Volunteers are needed now more than ever.  Would you be able to find an hour of your time to join the group to help with whatever you can, e.g. packing food parcels, phoning or visiting someone for a chat, giving someone a lift to the doctors.  Just a little bit of time could make a huge difference to someone's life. If you are interested in finding out more please speak to a current member of the Society, ring 07821 085869 or email Chris Stone at chris1@linfotech.co.uk

A Recycling Message form Christ the King

Dear all,
If you have been into the church recently you will have seen that some new containers have appeared for recycling. Please use them rather than putting recyclable items in the waste bin.
The blue container is in the foyer and is for  paper. The red and green ones are in the kitchen. The red one is for any soft plastic such as biscuit and cake wrappers, cellophane and coffee bags, and the green one is being re-labelled for general recycling so you can put in paper, card, tin cans, plastic bottles and trays, anything you would put in your council recycling bag at home. If you make tea or coffee in the kitchen the coffee grounds and used tea bags can go in the small green bin outside the kitchen. Please take any glass containers home for recycling. Hopefully there won’t be anything left to go in the actual waste bin!
We don’t currently have a recycling collection with our waste collection so I am looking for volunteers to occasionally empty the containers and take the contents away for recycling. If you would like to help with this then please contact the parish office.

Oliver’s Progress in formation to the Permanent Diaconate

You may recall that Oliver Larkin started the formation course to the Permanent Diaconate last year at St Mary’s College, Oscott. Last weekend, Oliver was admitted to Candidacy for Ordination as Deacon during Mass within the chapel at Oscott. The course lasts 4 years in total and involves one Saturday per month of tuition plus home study and assignments.

What is a Permanent Deacon?
Deacons have existed in the Church from its earliest days. They are referred to in the New Testament and in many of the writings of the very early Church. Since Vatican II the role of the Deacon has been defined as: ‘the service of the liturgy, of the Gospel and of works of charity’. Deacon Jon and Deacon Klaus serve our Cluster of parishes in Christ the King and St Bede’s.

So what is Candidacy?
Candidacy is a rite which takes place during seminary formation, by which the Church recognises the student as worthy of being ordained.Fr Francis, in his role as both parish Priest and Director of the Permanent Diaconate within the Diocese, together with a small team of “formators”, supported Oliver and made a recommendation to the Bishop to approve Oliver’s progress to the next stage of his journey.

What happens now?
Oliver has another almost 3 years of study, prayer, and formation and, please God, will be ordained to the Permanent Diaconate by the Bishop in the Summer of 2024 for service in the parish of St Augustine. Please pray for Oliver, his wife Natalie and family, as he continues to answer the call of God.
